My vote goes to the 1972 AMC Gremlin 401-XR. A 401 cubic inch V8 powered Gremlin which ran 13.90's in the 1/4 mile and were $15,911 in today's money. What do you think is the first?

Once again, I'm saying that's much more of a GT than Hot Hatch.

Still waiting for one :(

Passed up a good condition Omni GLHS because I didn't have the money. Had most ($2000) but not all ($2500)

FYI that was not factory. That was much like the Baldwin-Motion and Yenko cars. If we are including those, then:

What do I win? Joel guaranteed his phase III cars for 11.0 with his driver. 1 454 and I think 8 375hp small blocks were made in that year.

Or if you want a 4 cyl turbo hatch then here's Yenko's offering:

I'm very aware that these were done with a dealer.

That's a '73 Vega. The 1972 Gremlins at least had V8's from the factory, of which these were all based on.

Whoops. I duffed the date. Here's the '71 Motion with the small block.

Guaranteed 10's from Joel.

Also, those are coupes and not the traditional hatchback body style.

vs

I guess DQ'd because of quarter panel length? Door frame makes it a 2 door sedan IIRC.
