I'm shopping for a winter and trailhead car. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Advertised at a fair price with fairly low mileage for the model and year (137k), and supported by a picture of the odometer. So far so good! But wait...the "1" in the odometer looks a little odd, doesn't it?
I run the CarFax, and it turns out that there is a more or less steady progression of mileage over the years, last reported in 2006, with the DMV noting the mileage as 222,000+. D'oh! So the question now is this: is this a 237,000 mile LandCruiser, or a 337,000 mile LandCruiser? Or more? Either way, I'm steering clear just due to the enormous red flag of the incorrect mileage in the ad. So thanks, Craigslist, for another reminder that you just can't trust anyone.

I feel your pain.. Found a 2007 saab 9-3 that was falsely advertised as a manual with only 50k miles on it, 1 owner for $10,900. It was an auto, but now I don't know if I can trust the dealership because over the phone I was even told "Yeah it's a manual!"

Dealers get that wrong all the time. It's usually not them being dishonest but just lazy and incompetent. I've seen a ton of dealers that will interchangeably advertise a car with a selectable auto as a manual or an auto depending on who typed up the ad. Depending on what salesman you get, they may honestly believe that it is a manual.

I understand, they have all the correct info on their autotrader ad and on their own website, but the CL ad has the wrong transmission and seems to have lost 15k miles (it's a 65k car, CL says 50k). I'm assuming whoever made the ad is just genuinely incompetent. The dealer has some nice cars so maybe I can see how well this can be negotiated as I know a few people looking for a DD and this seems like it would fit the bill.

Could have guessed that from his ad, LOL. If you hear back from him, I'd be very interested in learning more about that car, particularly if you buy it and get it to run.

yeah i have the money in hand. i emailed him.
i was talking with my coworker, we can probably jump start it and drive it out. we walked around it (without the owner present).. noticed a few things, but all in all it looks great, interior looks great, minus a couple cali cracks in the dash.

Go for it. I'm not buying it. The wiring is a birds nest, connectors do not look stock (spliced and poorly wrapped), battery dead, and he told me he bought it and went drifting in Monroe a few times.
Just led me to believe that the engine could be shot, from high revs... but no way of knowing if it doesn't start... The interior and engine it self looks great though.
Let me know if you check it out/buy it!

I figured it was probably a project that turned out to be much more difficult than the owner expected and he gave up on it; shoddily-done swap makes sense. Was it really an S54? I'm so skeptical on Craigslist... I'm actually kind of shocked that it ran at some point. I wouldn't buy it either unless I had reason to believe the engine wasn't wrecked.
But the price is right even for a decent roller. I might check it out and will let you know.
It might make an interesting NPOCP post on Oppo if you felt like writing it up!

If you want my two cents on it ill give you a story/verbiage to include. as much as i hate what i am about to say, the car is worth buying and parting out. We didnt have enough light to see the bore diameter call out in the casting. If the engine is what we think it is, the engine by it self is worth 500-1000 bucks.. and the interior is really nice, probably has a good LSD too that's worth another 300.. you would make money parting it..
be quick on checking it out, he said there was 3 guys who looked before me. i guess he 'got 40 emails' about it within a couple hours.
