How do you people justify multiple cars?
Right now I have 3 cars. My 04 Marauder, 96 bronco and 85 745i. I have been wanting to get a new DD for quite a while now and I'm holding out on getting a full time position at my job before I do it (any day now). After 6 years and sitting at 90k miles the Marauder is retired from DD duty. I've been DD'ing my truck (which sucks at 80mph on the highway) and just recently got back to driving my 745i after a 2 month long transmission fiasco. Basically I somehow ended up with another project car. I really like driving the 745i but it needs some body work, and some HVAC work, and long story short its 29 years old.
I've been trying to play back in my head where I could keep 4 cars and how I could justify that but I'm not sure if I can honestly come up with an answer. I wanted to keep the 745i as a vintage project since I've never owned something so old, but shit, juggling 4 cars is going to be harder than I thought. If I get anything else I think I'm going to have to sell something and that something will have to be the 745i.

Wife's car - 2005 Golf TDI.
My car - 2002 New Beetle 1.8 Turbo
My ball and chain - 1972 MG Midget
Company car - 2013 VW CC
Wife won't drive my Beetle - manual transmission. I don't like putting a lot of personal miles on my company car...so Beetle. And the MG is barely a car by modern standards though I did just drive it out to grab some lunch and smiled the whole way. All are paid for, the VWs are solid and in good shape. So why not?

At one point I had three, a DD, a winter beater, and a project car but I've never had more than that. If I had room for it though I would certainly try but I'd keep the project cars down to one. Maybe two if at least one of them is a driver. In your situation I'd probably sell one too.

Having a teenage driver in the house has been my only ever justification for it. Two-car garages and HOA rules that don't allow parking on the street overnight have practically curtailed it, too. If I had the physical room to put another car without complication, I believe I would do it, and not worry about justifying it. If, however, I needed another justification, there is the fact that one of my cars is a two-seater and I have a decent sized family.

At my peak I had 4 cars (road legal vehicles with 4 wheels...) and 2 motorcycles. I used to have people (non-car-lovers) ask me all the time "What do you need that many cars for?"
My response was always the same: Nobody needs that many vehicles, but they are fun and I like it so I don't need a reason.
Also, I often got this question from women, so I would follow it up with; "do you need as many purses or shoes as you have? (well... I really really liked that last one I got and then there was a sale a prada, and blah blah blah). It's the exact same thing. These are my purses and shoes...

My sister and I still live with our parents...both parents work, she works and I am a grad student. My other sister used to work elsewhere that required a car, but she lives and works in a place that doesn't require a car. I've got 3 as well. 09 GTI, 94 Caprice 9C1 and my 82 240d. I certainly don't need 3, but they all have different attributes and suit different driving moods. GTI is great fun on back roads, 9C1 is great for long highway trips and the 240d is great for a peaceful cruise after work or on a nice day.

How long have you had the cars? In my mind, I think one should only own a car for a max of 2-3 years before moving on to something different. As an automotive enthusiast, wouldn't you want to experience as much different kinds of cars as possible in your lifetime? That's my way of looking at it.

I've had the marauder for 7 years, the bronco for 5 and the bmw since january of this year. The marauder I won't sell, you can only have your first car once in your life. The bronco is what I drive when the going gets tough and weather attacks. Which leaves the bmw and my current predicament.
if this was a 728i I would probably care less but the 745i is a rare car in the states (only 1000 imported). I probably wouldn't find another one in half decent shape if I wanted to buy another. Yet again I'm not sure if I'd buy another lol.

I'm stuck at three as car juggling is too annoying with my houses current setup. Driveway is 2 and a half deep followed by a garage. It's already a huge pain to have to move two cars out of the way to access whatever's in the garage. Later this year I'm going to widen the driveway so I can go two wide...then I'll be able to justify 4 plus.

his car had a LTCC coil conversion kit on it, the problem was the injectors were leaking fuel into the banks and it would cause the car to flood and not start until the gas would evaporate. His friend who bought it off him fixed that issue and is still trying to track down other issues.
It was a built H/C/I 96 that ran 12.8's on slicks.

Yup and yup! The SPG was a 900 Turbo with fancy ground effects, (mostly) debadged body and a tweaked APC system giving it 175 hp and 210 lb-ft over the standard Turbo's 165 hp and 195 lb-ft. One minor tweak shot me up to 210 hp and 225 lb-ft, then blew my head gasket :)

I DD the Seven and Impreza, wife drives the van until we manage to sell it, and the rest run, but aren't driven often. I guess saying the Fiero runs may be a stretch, but it can if I wanted it to. It's stripped of body panels ATM.

I have three - one collector that's an offroader, one DD, and one car that's being made into a hot rod pickup to DD. I see it as covering all my bases. Except the "moving lots of people" base, which, if they don't want to ride crampy in the Land-Rover (allegedly seats seven!) or in the back of the pickup, screw 'em. The '40s sedan base, OTOH remains uncovered. I need a Hudson right meow.

We have 3...the '97 Saturn SC1 with 210K miles, the '05 Malibu Maxx (shut up) with not quite 80K, and the '05 Tacoma with 98K. The Taco is the newest, purchased mostly because we wanted another truck and I REALLY wanted another 5spd. When asked if we wanted to trade the Saturn, we decided it wasn't going to be worth a lot in trade, but still ran and had no glaring issues at the time.
Since then we've put a new wheel hub, head cover gasket, and CV joint and boot on. Then it died on her last Thursday. Had it been more than just a loose battery cable, that might've been it for the Saturn.
Currently, the justification is "in case something catastrophic happens, we won't scramble to find transportation". So long as another $1000 repair doesn't show up, she plans on continuing to use the Saturn so we don't have to put 60 miles a day on anything else if we don't have to.

I hate when people argue that others have more cars than people. That's their decision. I'd much rather have another car than an expensive vacation. Or, instead of eating out several times a week, I eat cheap and have an extra car. People that complain about others having extra cars can go fuck themselves. It's a life choice and a hobby. If I count the wife's DD, I have 3 cars (prior to marriage, I routinely had three). If I had more storage, I'd have more. I've had the Tundra for almost 2 years (bought new), the Grand Cherokee for 4 months (bought new), and the '92 Miata (bought very un-new). My wife drives the GC, and typically hangs on to cars longer, 5-6 years. The Miata, I plan to hang on to awhile. It's the project car, and not easily replaced with another. I bought it during my wife's moment of weakness. I've found that when approval for a vehicle is given, I have about a 5 minute window of opportunity to act. The $900 purchase price helped the cause.
Having the Miata has helped with one thing, I basically rotate DD duties between the Tundra and the Miata. That may prolong the amount of time I keep the Tundra. My DDs tend to get replaced between 18-24 months.

As for your situation, I'd sell the E23 for an E38/E39. My 740iL was the best DD I ever had; only sold it because I didn't want it beaten and flogged while at school.

We have 5. GMC 2500 (454!) for the big stuff, '66 F100 because it was bought new by a family member and passed down, '86.5 Nissan pickup because it was my first vehicle and I'm attached to it, '95 SW2 for my DD, '04 Rav4 (I know!) for her. Only have full coverage on one of the rigs (Rav4) as that is the travelling rig, but I have parking and it's what I like, so no need for a lot of justification. We work hard for our money and I don't care what other people think of how we spend it.

I remember what Leno said in his Top Gear interview..."Who wouldn't do that if they could?"
I can afford 3 cars at the moment, so I have 3 cars. :)

If I was in his shoes I'd do the same thing. He probably has one of if not the biggest car collection in the US.

One is my wife's car, one is my dd pickup truck, one is my "fun" car, the last one is my youngest daughter's car that we keep for sentimental reasons because she was killed by a drunk driver in 2007.

So you have two cars and a project that could potentially replace one of them.

Yep. But if it does, I will possibly need a replacement project.

3 at my house. DD for me, DD for wife, and Montego for fun. Justification was that it had more usability than a boat/jetskis. Which may or may not have been an oversell to end up with a fun car knowing my wife wouldn't want the boat/jetskis lol

I have 3 cars. Does that count?
One is a 1987 Fiero GT with a 3.4L DOHC V6 and 5 speed that I swapped into it that is a blast to drive. The second car is a 1989 Merkur Scorpio that I restored to perfection. My third car is a 1987 Shelby Lancer which I am restoring. It is from Carrol Shelby's less popular Dodge period but I always thought it was a neat car none the less. I am in the process of upgrading all of my cars with better engines/transmissions/interiors/suspensions/ and brakes.
I have storage available for up to 8 cars so there is no problem there. I keep storage insurance on all of the cars and keep my license plates up to date with current registration using the storage insurance cards as proof of insurance. My insurance company, all state, will upgrade my insurance level from Storage to PLPD for a 10 day period for $20 so I can drive my cars whenever I want to. My work has lots of available company cars to drive so my DD is any one of those company cars. However, I am thinking of getting a permanent Daily Driver. Something new, adequately decent, cheap, and throw away like a Chevrolet Cruze.
Living like this is expensive, time consuming, but massively fun. I love doing it, and make enough money to afford it. My mind is constantly thinking about how to improve my cars to make them faster, quieter, handle better, and be more refined. I learn a lot everyday and 100% of that knowledge can be applied to my job so I am effectively better at work because of my hobby/obsession. I could save all this money I spend on my cars for retirement but then life would be boring to me. My 401K however is doing just fine though so I am not worried about retirement.

Quietly tiptoeing around the rules, my parents/family owns 5 cars. Dad's 2006 Euro Focus, Mum's 08 VW Tiguan, Sister's 03 Integra, the 94 Toyota Corona Exiv that we got for me and my sister to learn in, and my WIP '70 Triumph 2000.
