I don't like the SLK....
Let me re-phrase, I don't like the new SLKs. Back in the late 90's when the SLK first appeared I loved it. I was too young to drive, but I thought the Miata was the coolest thing on four wheels, and the Z3 was taking a close second. Then MB released this weird boxy coupe that was simultaneously a hard top and a convertible.
The miniature engineer in me went nuts over the concept. The mechanics involved in it all just stole my imagination. I bought models of it and read everything I could about it. It was great.
The new-er SLKs (R171 / R172) just don't have any appeal to me, but that old school R170 in all its boxy glory still peaks that inner child in me. In all the cars I've driven / ridden in I have never been in an SLK (any of them).
Anyone ever drive / ride in one? thoughts? Are they worth anything even remotely considering or should I just shut up and contemplate Miatas some more?

Well, Brabus did get their hands on the R170 before. And predictably, they made a monster out of it.
A Brabus built 6.5L V8 churning 450bhp. If you wanted one new, £100,000 please.

Lol, I would opt for the SLK3 2 AMG; 350hp V6 SC would be just fine in this. Only problem is no manual transmission (DAMMIT MERCEDES!)

I know that for the Crossfire at least, some people have swapped the manual in with the supercharger. Also it seems easy to get them to 400 + hp.

Glad you weren't referring to an R-Class with a 1.7l engine.

I just read an article on what to look out for with R170s. Well, there's obviously the roof to check carefully, but apart from that, no real horror stories. It's basically a C-class with a fancier body, so nothing much to worry about. The some weird reason, they said that cars from before the facelift in March 2000 were less likely to rust. But all in all good solid cars.

This is good news as I have found a Blue SLK230 with 80 k on the clock for just over $6k not to far from here...
