A 2-door hatchback with AWD, decent ground clearance, and an available manual transmission? It sounds fantastic, and you're all fucking monsters.
"But it's not ' mini' anymore!"

It's the Clubman. Wish the '04 MCS had been AWD. I'd probably still have it.

3 door, cool. Manual, great. AWD? In a Mini? Uh, ok... give it 300 hp and charge under $30k and they'll fly off dealer lots.

Pfft, you call THAT ground clearance?
My '01 CL-S laughs at your so-called concepts of ground clearance.

My only problem with it is that a Countryman just makes more sense to me. Now I'm usually all for coupes, when they add something over their 4-door counterparts. Some look significantly better, others add sportier tuning, some lose weight. This just seems to lose some practicality. But that's just how I feel. I'm sure some people think this is better looking, but not me. I'm not a big fan of the current crop of Minis in general right now.

$28k for a Paceman Cooper S ALL4 (181HP), and $35K for a Paceman JCW ALL4 (208HP). They're both rocking 4-banger turbos.

This is my problem with Minis. The JCW cars are overpriced and underpowered. With the Focus/Fiesta ST out there running around you can't charge $35k for 208 horsepower. 300 hp and they have a real player.

Since you put it this way... It's not very attractive though. There's so much they could've done with the concept of a "3 door AWD Hatchback" if it wasn't a mini...

I agree. The Countryman is cheaper and a heckuva' lot more practical. I'm curious if the Paceman weighs any less, though.
I do think the Paceman looks better than its larger brother.

Take it from someone who has driven hundreds of these.
You don't want it.

Mini likes to claim that it sports a more luxurious interior than those other cars, but I'm not so sure.
Also, I'm not sure if you were directly comparing the Paceman to those two Fords, but if you were, power isn't where all that money is being poured, so it's not exactly apples to apples. Those are hot hatches and this is more of a light utility vehicle with a bit of sugar sprinkled on top.
The Mini JCW was priced just below $30k if I remember correctly.
And the JCWs are a complete rip-off.

You don't need 300 HP to have fun, though. And I can't imagine how you'd use 300 HP on a day to day basis. 200 is pretty much tops in this segment.

According to Edmunds, a base Paceman with a manual is 113 lb lighter than a similar Countryman. So I guess there is some advantage. It's also a bit better on gas (1mpg city/3 highway over Countryman). So there. two reasons to get a Paceman over a Countryman.

You don't need awd or a manual to have fun either, but it has those things. And 200 hp is roughly what a Fiesta ST has, and it costs way less money. 300 was my best case scenario, I'd accept 250 and a price drop.

I wasn't making a direct comparison, but for a smallish hatch that's supposed to be fun to drive you sometimes have to compare cars that aren't evenly comparable. The only big thing this has over a Focus ST is AWD, and that eats away power.
Minis are supposed to be premium cars, but that doesn't mean they can give it a half assed powertrain and ask crazy money for it. The JCWs need more power, and despite what some say power does matter.

It's a pretty huge advantage if it's something one needs. Again, it's not a harsh hot hatchback.

Irrelevant. Just because car x costs cheaper than car y doesn't justify the power difference. Remember the Peugeot and Bugeye Sprite battle?

If you're argument comes down to an inch of ground clearance you're grasping at straws. It's ok to like the Minis- I do, I just think that for what you pay you don't really get much, especially the JCW models which are supposed to be the sporty fast ones.

Nobody is grasping at anything. I don't even know what you're trying to argue.
That someone looking for a tiny crossover that'll tackle dirt roads and snowfall comfortably should consider a harsh, low, hot hatchback? Because horse power?
Yes, JCWs are expensive. Yes, Minis are expensive. Thanks. Got it.

Heavy, slow, overpriced, unreliable, AWD system isn't really that great, gas tank is too small and for a 1.6L the fuel economy is atrocious, too small to be a cross over, too big to be a mini.
My Forester XT is the same size as a countryman and barely heaving and it gets the same fuel economy with a 250~ HP turbo 2.5 boxer and a 5 speed.
