One of my buddies just picked up a Ninja 300 as a first bike and asked me to show him and his wife some basics while they wait for basic rider training next month. They both picked it up pretty quick, although it was a fight to get her over about 10mph (she didn't believe be that a motorcycle is FAR more stable at around 15 mph than it is at 5).
This was the first time I'd ever been on a lightweight beginner's bike, and, WOW, I really wish I'd started out on one rather than the big heavy (and poor handling) 1970s-1980s Japanese bikes that have contributed so many interesting scars to my body.
Far anyone looking to get into motorcycling, I'd highly recommend picking one of these up used. They look great, have plenty of power (as in it won't feel terribly slow after a month), and a very comfortable riding position. Plus, if you buy used, it would be easy to flip it in a few years and get nearly all of your money back.

I just want to learn to ride one, in a closed environment. No interest in riding on the streets but I like to know how to ride/drive things. Would basic rider training be what I should look for?

Yes, it is aimed at people who have never ridden before, as a bonus (depending on state) it also counts as the practical test for a motorcycle endorsement.

Could you explain the concept of a "beginner bike"? Why buy a 300 when you will inevitably move up to a 1000?
Im not a rider so thanks for excusing my ignorance

Very nice! I'm on a Suzuki Gw250. Because cheap.

Excuse my EXTREME bike ignorance, but I'm thinking about picking up a "weekend warrior" and honestly I've been getting the bike itch. I've never ridden before, so do you think it would be more fun to buy a bike for my backroad drives or buy say an supercharged E36 M3?
I'm assuming the bike is gonna be 10x more fun...

Because a beginner would pop a wheelie and die on a literbike without learning proper throttle control first. My bike can hit 90 in first gear and can power wheelie in third, that's why there are beginner bikes

Explain why a Dodge Viper ACR isn't the best car to learn to drive in.

The bike will be more fun, and once you know what you're doing you will be the fastest thing on the road. Just take a rider safety course, start on a easy bike and get all the safety gear that you can fit on your body.

if you have no need for passengers, luggage space, ext. A bike is about the purest motoring experience on earth

Very good! Now imagine a world where that Viper only costs a couple grand more than a Miata and you see why so many people buy them to learn on, then either scare themselves and swear off bikes, or really get hurt/killed. The folks that are in the latter group make motorcycles look like suicidal death machines to people that don't ride. It's not bikes that are dangerous (well, they are) it's the folks that bite off more than they can chew and choke on it.

yeah, I'll be spending LOTS of time practicing before I'm comfortable having some backroad fun. I'll definitely be wearing lots of safety gear.
I may not be remembering correctly, but in VA I feel like it's a pretty long process to get a motorcycle license. Might have to put this off until summer.

That's great to hear, I'll be looking into getting a bike/motorcycle license.

Another thing to think about is(once you are ready) you can purchase a bike that is 95% as fast as a moto gp (motorcycle formula 1) bike for under $10k. Try finding a similar deal with a car ;)

That's what turned me onto bikes in the first place! $10k gets you A LOT when it comes to a bike, but $10k doesn't really give me a wide variety of performance cars that I'd like to drive. Also, it'll be much more fuel efficient! I don't even want to think about how bad insurance will be though...

Insurance is FAR cheaper than cars, I have a 2006 CBR1000RR and pay around $400/year (liability only) for insurance on something that can (with a far better/braver rider than I) get from 0-100 mph a full second quicker than a 2013 Nissan GTR.

WOW, didn't expect it to be that cheap. I don't live in an area where I could ride year round but this would be a really great way to save money in the warmer months.
