Just putzing around the interwebz and started thinking: On the Scion and Subaru twins what would you do, Super Charger or Turbo Charger?

Kinja'd!!!

I am thinking that graph begs for a supercharger.

And, happy fun time!

I vote LS swap anyways

LOL, because both is notoriously tricky...?

And, guy who just yesterday said he didn't have the mechanical skills to LS swap... I wonder the witchcraft required to get a LS-anything into a BRZ. Let alone how bad it would bork the handling of a car meant to have a very low center of gravity thanks to the Boxer...

I don't have the mechanical knowledge to do much of anything on a car. I bet I could figure out an oil change, but I've never done one.

There are people out there who do have skills, surely they could figure it out.

I don't think it would bork the handling because of the low CG, but it would probably make the car stupidly nose heavy. People put them in Miata's though, so it might not be terrible

No witchcraft needed, there's a kit .

Weird, I was just contemplating the same thing last night.

Not that I own a Toybarion, but if I did...

I'd just take a Boxer 6 out of another Subie and put it in there somehow.

Wow, very cool but stupid expensive. $3200 for mounts, oil pan and driveshaft! $9100 for complete "kit" minus the engine. Figure in the engine... Your halfway to the cost of the car. That same ~$40k (before any shop fees if you needed to) gets you a heck of a lot of C6. In fact eBay has a 07 Z06 for right around $40.

Its always an important question on a car, where are the weak spots, what best supplements the characteristics of the car.

Another valid and odd route to go...

Thoughts though:

The 6 is not very much better. Full bolt ons would probably make the same difference as swapping to the Boxer-6. (Except the torque)

More torque is what the BRZ needs, so the 6 makes sense. And 256 horsepower sounds just about perfect for it.

Thanks for the shout-out! I agree with you: I vote for SC. Mostly on the basis that I don't feel like the car needs a ton of extra boost, but it does need some mid-range oomph to fill that torque hole. (Side note: "torquehole" is a great insult you can use on your gearhead friends! Especially if you don't care too much about keeping them.) If you can get it pushing out about 220 bhp, maybe 200 lb-ft of torque, then I'm an extremely happy camper. So (by way of referring back to that dyno graph you posted), Edmunds/InsideLine supercharged their FR-S , and it achieved basically the exact results I'd like to see:

Not to mention that the install looks pretty painless (which is to say, it's a Subaru engine, but you don't need to take it out of the car).

Agreed, but ~50 would be a lower end super or turbo too. But if you prefer NA then certainly would work.

Yep, phenomenal! It looks like that did exactly what one would want. Bring up the low end, fill out the torque "hole" or "crater" and give the car a smooth flat experience. Perfect for AutoX too!

And 3-6 hour for a bolt on supercharger, the times they are change-ed!
