There is a possibility that I could be daily driving one of these kick ass things in the near future! If we got one it would be my parents car but I would get to daily drive it!
You see, my parents have friends that like to ride Harleys and my parents want to be able to go on trips with them. However my mom is terrified of riding a motorcycle after she worked in the ER for a couple of years. So her solution is that she wants to get a convertible and go drive it with the pack.
So if we go through with it we would trade in the Mini (which has no warranty) and buy a 2006-ish SL500 from carmax for about $30,000 and then get the 6 year 60,000 mile warranty on it (thanks doug for telling us about it!). Seeing as how we would be trading in my car I would drive the SL daily until I leave for the Peace Corps in about 2 years. When they wanted to use it they can and I'll just drive my Dad's pick-up.
I've already been doing research on upkeep and it's not really that bad! $700-800 for 4 tires and while the $120 for a normal service is steep, with the money we'd be saving not having to buy expensive parts I think we could manage.
So yeah if this goes through I'll be pretty excited to get to drive around in an SL500 for 2 to 3 years! I would go on SO many road trips!

I love the idea of a pack of Harley rolling down some two-lane black top with one of these in the middle. "Nothing to see here, just a really big motorcycle".

The biggest nightmare is the top. When it's down, those newer SLs have barely any trunk space, so it might not be much of a longer trip car. The older R129s had a separate space between the cabin and trunk for the soft top, so you could easily pack for a weekend away. The newer SLs are a bit of a party pooper in that department.
The actual top mechanism is probably a bit more reliable in the newer cars, so that's a plus. Gas mileage is honestly better than you'd expect, and if you're only dropping $800 on tires, that's a huge benefit.
It's a beauty of a car, and all the SLs are wonderful for road trips, you'll take wrong turns on purpose just to explore in that car. Sure, the parts are a little hefty, but as long as you take care of the car, it's no less reliable than anything else on the road. $30k is a pretty good price, just get a really good idea of what the warranty will cover. If it has the hydraulic or air suspension, make sure that's covered, because I'd hate to see the repair cost if even just one corner stops functioning.

nice! You'll be having lots of fun.
You should try to swing them for an AMG model, so they can uhhh... keep up with the Harley's better!
PS: don't listen to all the party poopers talking about maintenance. Not only do you have a warranty, but about 50% of the time people are exaggerating/are talking out of their asses. Before I bought my BMW everyone loved telling me how I'd be broke after a month. I got it late last July and it's been awesome so far. Just a battery killed by the harsh winter we got this year, so I'm having more fun than all those naysayers that are driving their Jettas and I'm even saving money on maintenance!

Suspension is covered minus the shocks which would be 500 (excluding maintenance) a piece if one went out.
The only real things that it doesn't cover is:
Brake rotors
Shock absorbers
Catalytic converters
accessory drive belts
glass of any sort
headlights and taillights
trim
upholstry
soft convertable tops
Coolant hoses
and consumables (brake pads, sparks plugs, bulbs, etc)
Also if you get a car with a manual they don't cover clutches or plates.

Thanks, I'll need it to push my dad! But I wanted to ask you, do they offer different warranties? I heard someone talking about a 100,000 mile warranty.

There was a sl65 on carmax for 64k-ish. Now your costs doubled for everything, But v12.

I would do it if you can. The car is beautiful, you'll love it from the moment you sit in it for the first time. Try to do work on it yourself too, they really aren't scary to work on. Since shocks are covered, you should be okay, the SLs use hydraulic or air strut assemblies. I wouldn't do the work with them myself, but most other things I'll tackle.
For $30k, you'll be getting a beautiful car. I hope it works out and you land it!
Someone else mentioned the SL65, if that's an option, I highly recommend the V12. You can even get a Renntech Twin Turbo, and everything is better with twin turbos .

SO true. It's usually just the haters who don't even drive anything European to being with. And they have that perception most likely from their dads or uncles who were American Iron guys.

Exactly! They come in with preconceived opinions and refuse to give German brands a try. American cars are only recently getting "on that level".
