Jacking up cars is one of my least favorite things to do. It makes me so nervous I'm not going to get it right and I'm going to fuck up myself or my car. Anyone else have this fear?

My wife doesn't like me having to do it. I use ramps as much as I can. But I just dislike it because I have a low car.

I believe that you are suffering from "Jackaphobia"
A common Phobia for car enthusiasts who share the common beliefs that their child mary not be amply held by the jack.
I suffered from these symptoms while rotating my tires in the Target parking lot last week.

Strictly forbidden by the Mrs. Which I happily oblige.

I have no problem jacking up cars, just as long as I have my stands to hold the weight.

That's what the harbor freight low profile jack is for :)

I hate doing it, also, i feel kind of scared under it. luckily one time when i was going to install my short shifter i went to a local garage and asked if i could use their elevator (i know the owner from years now) he said yes, and i finished the work in like 30 min. If i had to jack the car up and then down, it would have taken me much more time.

I've jacked up so many cars it doesn't bother me any more. I've had jacks fail on me, dropping the vehicle to the ground (without me underneath it) too. Don't bother me none.

Your fear is perfectly comprehensible. Everybody knows - or should know - that jacking a car up is, potentially, extremely dangerous. A friend of a friend was found dead in his garage, his Fox-body Mustang having fell on him because the jacks wouldn't hold.
Always practice safe jacking, and, as others have noted, try to use a well-constructed ramp if possible. Or just play it safe and take it to a shop. Or win the lottery and install a lift, heh.

I keep trying to talk my wife into letting me buy a lift.

I'm sure you've used these arguments, but in case not:
1. a ramp may pay for itself over time due to avoiding labor charges on the family car(s).
2. It's much, much safer than anything else.
3. It's much easier to work efficiently and effectively on the car, increasing the likelihood you'll fix it right the first time.
4. You will score 1000 Oppo Points when your jealous friends say, "Whoa, dude, you got a lift?!" actually nevermind, don't use that one...

Nope!
But then again, my car is easy to jack up and isn't grounded to the ground like the newer cars, and it's a cheap car that's not worth very much.

Funny place to jack. On my car, the jacking points are between the front wheels, and between the rear wheels

Yup! And yeah it is a pretty awesome jack. Low profile, high lift, low price, high quality.

I'm waiting until I get a decent set of ramps to do any work underneath the car. Jack stands don't bother me, as long as I'm just doing work that require wheel removal, and they're backed up in triplicate preferably.

Another example of the importance of comma placement.

Plus side of the lifted XJ: Unless I'm rotating the tires or doing a brake job, I rarely have to jack it up.
Downside of the lifted XJ: When I do need to jack it up, I have to put wood blocks on the jack and stands, and THAT brings out my nerves.

Right on the pinch weld. One of the strongest places on the car.

Try doing it with a high lift jack on a lifted truck with droopy suspension...

As I mentioned above or below, high lift jacks scare me much more.

Although let's be honest, jacking off can be pretty hard too.

I even tried to tell her how she'd be able to park under the Mustang in the winter time.
