I'm going off to college next year and will need something 4wd. I am leaning towards a m/t wrangler and wanted to know if anyone has any opinions, warnings, preferences, comments etc. about them. Other suggestions are welcome, the budget is around 14-16k.

I was going to say XJ, but with $16k I'd say get a cherry hawk eye WRX.

Any reason for needing a 4x4 or AWD?

X2
Wranglers are fun with no doors and roofs, but they're drafty / cold in the winter. XJ if you want to daily a Jeep. But with that budget, WRX or something.
If you want ground clearance / SUV, it's hard to beat a Nissan xTerra. 4WD, manual, good V6, and no horrible, crippling issues. They're pretty reliable and good in bad weather.
CUV / Crossover style, there's bunches of Subarus, the Honda CRV / Toyota Rav4 (if you want something boring and predictable).

I'll be going farther north for school and the drive is back country 2 lane highways. Snow is pretty common and my rwd 4runner has already proven ineffective in snow this winter. Plus the 4 runner is being given to a sibling next year as a first car so I'll be needing to get a car anyways. I figured while I'm in the market, might as well go 4wd/awd.

Do you really need the AWD/4WD?
Of course, the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe were available with AWD. The Suzuki SX4 and Aerio SX are good picks too.
The Colorado and Canyon might also work for you and they are also cheaper than the Tacoma.
Another good option might be the 2004+ Acura RL, which I believe come standard with AWD.

Warning: as my dumb ass learned this winter spinning a complete 360 across 4 lanes of traffic and miraculously not killing myself, anyone else, or my Jeep, 4WD won't save you from ice. Whatever you get, budget some cash for good winter tires and take it easy in ice and snow.

I just got a Mitsubishi Montero Limited, 4wd with plenty of off-road capability. Heated seats, sunroof, leather, nice stereo, and you can find plenty below your price threshold. I had some mechanical problems with mine, but that's really not typical- these cars are tanks. Has tons of space and a third row seat that tucks away into the floor, too.

Whatever you get, budget for winter tires. They make a huge difference, even with an AWD car - particularly on side roads where the plowing's marginal or nonexistent.

Replace your 2Runner with a 4Runner?

Sorry for being so late getting back but yeah that's one of my options. At the moment I've got an 03 and my dad recently got an 08 4runner that's the v8 4x4. He said that I could switch to the 08 if I wanted and he would replace it for himself or I could get something of similar value. The 08 is almost exactly like mine (minus the v8 4x4 stuff) right down to the color. It drives pretty much the same and I think it's time for me to drive something different. Plus I figured by getting something different and staying below budget, I could easily afford winter tires or other things I might want to change with the new car.
