Kinja'd!!!

I just paid my deposit to attend the University of Alabama in the fall! I'm planning to study mechanical engineering and I'll also be in a program to get an MBA along with a the bachelor's degree in a total of five years. The best part is, I got a full-ride scholarship that's good for 10 semesters so both degrees will be completely free! Any Bama opponauts on here? I visited the campus earlier this week and it was the first time in my life that I've been to Alabama. I loved it, but I could use any advice for getting to know the area better. The Mercedes plant where they build most of their SUV's is just down the road and apparently they hire interns and employees directly from the university. Alabama's engineering department also helps Mercedes test engines. As you may be able to tell, I'm really excited.

And as if that weren't good enough, I asked a girl to prom yesterday and she said yes! Life's good. I feel like Sun Yang right now

Congrats! I have a friend going to U of Alabama next year. I've never seen the campus, but she says its awesome. And that would be an amazing in at MB, too!

Thanks! Yeah the campus is beautiful. They've been putting up quite a few new buildings lately thanks largely to football money, and they'll have a brand new student center, dining hall, rec center, and 2 buildings of dorms opening for this fall. It's quite impressive.

Yay for free school! Getting an MBA with no student loans will give you such a head start in your career. Sounds like a lot of studying in your future. Don't forget to have fun!

Solid advice, thanks man. Avoiding booze might be a tall order though.

Yep it's an amazing opportunity. I have enough AP credit to basically start as a sophomore but I'm still planning to stay the full 5 years, so that should take some of the pressure off. Hopefully having the country's fifth largest stadium visible from everywhere on campus will remind be to have fun once in a while. This thing is seriously incredible.

don't go more than eight in a night. That tends to be the average hangover breaking point.

People will tell you that the weekend starts on thursdays. It doesn't.

Do everything you possibly can to avoid scheduling classes before 10 AM.

Go by and talk to your advisor at least once a month. He or She is probably stuck with way too many students, so if they don't seem to give a shit, she/he won't go out of their way. Establishing at least a bit of rapport could pay off.

Have plenty of sex, but try to avoid hooking up with people in your building, and definitely avoid hooking up with people on your floor. Keep the drama outside.

It holds over 101,000 people, which happens to be quite a bit more than the population of Tuscaloosa, where it's located.

Nice! I didn't ever visit there, too big for me. But then I came to a big city, which isn't awesome either. Someone said don't schedule classes before 10am. I would say never start your day after 10, I like early classes. So just go with whatever you think will work the first semester. And make sure to focus the first semester to have a good start.

My advice to you as someone whom completed a worthless arts degree; Make sure, when you get near the end of University, to make plans for what you want to do next. Go through your final years thinking about "how will I apply this to a job" when looking at course selections. I understand mechanical engineering is more hands on than my worthless degree, but my brother is a mechanical engineer, and he made the mistake of not planning in advance for when he completed.

Seriously though, I envy you, Congratulations; all your hard work has paid off, keep working hard and your future is bright son!

Great school. Daughter did her postgraduate there and loved it. I live where LSU is worshipped though, so I usually only wear my Bama cap in the house.

Yes, I am currently a senior in mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama (graduating May 2014). I also have done work in the combustion lab, and I have taken nearly every automotive related ME elective currently offered by the department. In fact, I may have actually been the one to give you a tour, if you have been on an engineering facilities tour in the past year. What would you like to know? I can answer just about any question concerning ME curriculum, student life, professors, campus politics, etc.
