I've checked four separate listings for this set (3 on eBay and 1 on Amazon) and all sit comfortably over $1,000. I have one in my dresser drawer gathering whatever amount of dust can build inside a dresser drawer. What to do.

Make an extraordinarily compelling (multi-million-views) youtube video of you building and/or destroying it, but get your advertisements all set up in advance. Collect well over $1000 in ad revenues, buy another on ebay.

sell it! I'm sure it was only like $80-$100 new. nothing like making profit 10 fold.
sell it and buy car parts or a motorcycle or even a miata.

Ugh, but I
just
made a multi-million-view YouTube video the other day.
Also, and I know this goes against the OppO way, I'm trying to get rid of my totally awesome sweet Alabama liquid snake LEGO sets. I think they'll find a better home that way.

I bet I could even get enough for a Carpotiatacycle.

Legos, man. The best investment. No depreciation period. I think I read an article about this guy who was paying for his kid's college by buying and selling bricks—plastic bricks, not coke, haha

Is yours still in box? or is it built

I've got this set, too. Listed prices are nuts, but I wonder if anyone actually spends that much on one of these. I love it too much to let it go, I'm afraid...

I have the Ferrari set, missing a few bits though, so wouldn't go for this much.

Yeah, I learned that earlier today. I have some other flagship Technic sets and none is listed below $200.
Also,

I really want to try buying a couple future-classics and stash them for a decade..

Built with stickers missing and with the residue still on the plates. That stuff is tenacious.
I guess that'll knock a couple hundred off.

I wondered that, too. I saw the list prices on eBay, but I didn't bother to look at the bids. One auction had 20 people watching it, so maybe that speaks to the popularity.
Where I am in life, I like the idea of a super large LEGO model of an F1 car, but in practice, I have no storage or display real-estate for it. It can use a better home.

I think the best indicator of future value is big-name partnership (Mercedes-Unimog, Volvo) or part count (the bulldozer or big construction crane).

Yeah like anything, it being out of the packaging seriously slashes its value. Now for all we know you could have assembled it with your own bricks (OK, there's probably some kit-specific parts in this car, but you know what I'm saying).

The Michelin-branded tires, the white double-pin dealies and maybe some other parts are unique.
Also, I still have the BMW V12 sticker on the engine.

Yeah. Collabs are certainly good (like the Maersk ship from a while back) but you can also tell when TLG releases a 'flagship' kit (like the Emerald Night). Shopping for a good investment should be tons of fun

I had the minifig-scale Williams F1 car from the same era. The stickers are all cake now but the parts are still there... the most interesting part about that kit was the steering wheel with the white base and the blue wheel. I treasure it, wonder what it's valued at (I should check Peeron)

That Ferrari set always did look cool, but all the empty space inside it bothered me.
It just looked like it was made from too few pieces.

I'm with you. Just like owning a great car that you never actually get to drive - better to let someone else get enjoyment from it (and make some money as well). Mine is sitting in a back room - you've convinced me to put up a shelf or something, at least so I see it and enjoy it more often.
