But their history was one of violence and destruction. At first, they struggled against dangers present from the flora and fauna of their own planet, and then they struggled against their own, eliminating countless members of their own species with advanced and accelerating technology. After piercing the heart of the stars and glimpsing their own potential for complete and total destruction, only then did they give themselves pause.
But it wasn't enough. The deep scars of the violent struggles of the past fueled their paranoia. Over and over did they replay hypothetical invasion scenarios to themselves, in special gathering rooms across the planet, produced at great cost. When the time came for them to leave their cradle, billions had within them visions of their home-world being consumed in the fires of interstellar warfare.
So off they went. Hoping from star to star, habitable world to habitable world, colonizing, war-faring, consuming, eliminating, destroying. Once they gathered the momentum, they became unstoppable. No one could oppose them. Other younger races were simply erased in the wave of colonization that swept the galaxy. After an uncountable number of years, a river of blood ran woven through every star and habitable planet in the Milky Way. Their conquest was complete.
So now, here at the end of the universe, with all of the galaxy's resources run dry, and every lifeform returned to the stardust from whence it came, no one ever knew; none of the victims, the rebels, the traitors, the innocents consumed in the great galactic fires of war, the soldiers who either gave themselves to the cause or died for nothing, not even the conquerors themselves. Converging someplace in the long distant past is an identity long lost to cosmological timescales, and a place - once a beautiful blue jewel - now a relic one among a trillion others. No one ever knew who they were, why they were they way they were, or where exactly it is they came from...
