Since we are doing vans today, why not educate ourselves on quite a peculiar one. The Elite Laser 49er Minivan Kit. Yes, you heard that right, it was a kit that you could build at home.
Around 30 of these kits, which were supposed to go on a Beetle chassis, were made by Elite Enterprises in the late 70s/early 80s.
They were supposed to be the last word in luxurious motoring. Just look at those gullwing doors!
You could fit any VW or Porsche engine of that era. Come to think of it, it shouldn't be too hard to even get a Subie boxer in there. If you've got a little free time and want to drive something truly unique, there even seems to be a kit for sale right now: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Intriguing, except for the terrible window lines and unfortunate visual similarity up front to a Dodge Omni.
