There are aspects of various car communities that transcend simple trends and become ubiquitous within the culture in general - concepts that are taken for granted as a staple in the community, regardless of the detriment they can potentially pose. One in particular that deserves a literary shotgun blast to the temple is a scourge visible in nearly every car magazine, show, and photoshoot: The "hot chick".

Dear Hot Girls Posing with Cars and the People who Promote them,
I'm a 20-something male that has more money than brains on most days of the week. I'm in love with all makes and models and not picky at all when it comes to admiring a car's qualities. Hell, I like the Pontiac Aztek and I've owned a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I spend more time looking at pictures of cars on the internet than I do actually driving the cars I own. I also enjoy the female form so much I married one, and have no problem appreciating pictures of scantily-clad women and dabble in the regular viewing of various online accounts of women showing their unique skills. I'm your target demographic.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And I'm pissed.
I, like many other enthusiasts, treat cars as pieces of individualistic expression - an art form that is honed by many sleepless nights coupled with a few great and/or crazy ideas. When you feature a car, you're looking at the culmination of someone's hard work and craftsmanship. Putting an airbrushed, dead-eyed girl in a reverse cowgirl position on the hood wearing nothing but dental floss misses the point completely. It attempts to short-circuit any wiring we have as red-blooded men reserved for reason and instead attacks the reptilian center of the brain that deals with squirting seed anywhere it can, no matter what the cost.
It's gilding the lily, ruining any beauty found in the initial concept and replacing it with the kind of cheap flash you get behind the counter at a convenience store.
We as a civilization have evolved to understand our more primal impulses and do well to reject the ones that could get us into trouble for the most part. When you take a car - a product of that civilization's technological triumph - and put it next to a symbol of some animalistic sexual fantasy, you get chocolate spaghetti, a result that's orders of magnitude worse than if you had separated the two concepts to begin with. You're essentially treating adults like infants that have neither the ability nor the need to reason properly.
Imagine that instead of cars, printers are all the rage. Countless magazines and clubs form, devoted to modifying and acquiring the latest and greatest printers, and on the covers of said magazines and forefront of said shows are college sophomores that have more student loan debt than they do fatherly advice, with the hopes that one day the nearly nude pictures they did for a company that sells copier toner will get them a chance to sit on a black couch and potentially make $1000-$5000 a day if they're really good at following directions.
In addition, the booth babe concept makes it harder for regular women to enter the arena and contribute something notable. Imagine taking a young woman to a major import or hot rod show without seeing that the only roles women like her play in the production are walking around in pasties, giving reluctant hugs, and calling security on the touchy guy that just downed his 8th Miller Lite in his "If you can't DODGE it, RAM it" sleveless tee. I'm all for objectification of the sexes when it's the only purpose of the product within the culture, such as designer clothing within fashion, but when it's something that requires intelligence and skill rather than physical appearance, aspiring women enthusiasts may find themselves in a tough spot trying to belong in the community.
In conclusion, please stop trying to make my love of cars something that turns my biology against me in order for you to make a buck. Stop making the car community a forum that sells boner pills. Stop making it difficult for our car-loving daughters, wives, and sisters to integrate into the community without being exposed to the "tits or GTFO" mindset. Let's work together to raise the bar in the community, to make it more initially inclusive, and to let the world know that car culture is indeed more than the sum of its parts.

THIS keeps me from car shows and gatherings of what would ostensibly be like minded individuals. THIS anachronistic, misogynistic, objectifying sexism. Don't get me wrong, I like naked boobs, I get porn, hell I LIKE porn (don't stop those NSFW posts on my account), but it's getting old, dated and so out of touch with the times as it relates to "hot chicks and cars" that it does more harm than good. Nope. NSFW posts are fun. They are clearly marked, if you don't like them, just don't click on them?
"jack-off material" is one way of looking at, "appreciating the female form" seems more appropriate to me.
As for women posing on/with cars, I'm cool as long as they aren't scratching the paint job.

I get your point, but isn't it up to you/us to be able to discern the difference between sexual attraction and a car you actually care about? When I was 14, I probably couldn't tell the difference, but now I'm good to go.
And really, when was the last time you saw Ford, or BMW or a major automaker send out photos of some bikini girl splayed out on the hood of one of their cars. It's usually a magazine, or website or something just trying to sell issues or get hits, not like they are selling the actual car.

"I get your point, but isn't it up to you/us to be able to discern the difference between sexual attraction and a car you actually care about?"
Yes, but as I've said, there's a huge contextual difference between a car enthusiast that happens to be attractive and a girl wearing a thong bending over the trunk for a photoshoot or event. It's not slight.
"And really, when was the last time you saw Ford, or BMW or a major automaker send out photos of some bikini girl splayed out on the hood of one of their cars. It's usually a magazine, or website or something just trying to sell issues or get hits, not like they are selling the actual car."
Which is why I wrote "One in particular that deserves a literary shotgun blast to the temple is a scourge visible in nearly every car magazine, show, and photoshoot: The "hot chick"." in the first paragraph. :)

Concur about the differences, but your point is being made under the guise of "stop trying sell me something" and I'm not sure who actually buys anything based on the girl posing next to the thing. For those people I feel sorry.
If it's based more around the concept of not objectifying women, that I understand, and can get behind. Dirty pun not intended. :) Particularly the concept of making it harder for women to get into cars as an enthusiast. I suppose the organizers, marketeers, etc. play to their audience, which is men. Sort of a chicken and egg quandary isn't it? Women don't go to hot rod shows b/c of other scantily clad women, but scantily clad women are there b/c most of the clientele are men.

"I'm not sure who actually buys anything based on the girl posing next to the thing. For those people I feel sorry."
A company doesn't have to be direct in its ad campaign. It can associate a good feeling you have, such as a sexual attraction, with the brand. In the same way Geico commercials have nothing to do with insurance and more with making ironic or humorous jabs at various concepts in society. No one is getting insurance because a CGI gecko told them to, they get insurance because it's a name they associate with good feelings and ubiquitous advertising campaigns that caught them off guard.
Also, a mag like Import Tuner has girls on the front so you'll instantly be attracted and want to pick it up. They make money from the advertisements inside, which you are much more likely to read if you flip through the magazine, so having a sexy woman on the cover indirectly keeps them afloat.
I'm not trying to rail against objectification, as I think it's a person's right to be treated in the way they'd like to be treated. If they want to be seen as objects of desire, then so be it. It's human nature to want things like that at first glance. What I mean to say is that it makes things harder for girls to enter the arena of car enthusiasm. I'm guilty of it as well, and I'll give you an example. Courtney Hansen is a certified car nut, host of Power Block and Overhaulin', but for some reason, because she was an attractive woman, my brain went immediately to "she's faking it", and "the executives just put a pretty face in front of the camera.", and that was wrong of me. We have to notice the difference between who's there to show off their craftsmanship and who's there to show off their tits.

I didn't know you could get paid to browse Oppositelock. Was it a hard job to get? :)
Also, I'm not sure how that would be considered NSFW. All clothes are on, and there's giant text covering most of her body. The only way you'd get in trouble is if you're trying to get fired or your boss is the leader of the Phelps clan.

A well stated opinion. Thanks for sharing. The only part I really agree with, though, is the bit about discouraging women from attending car shows. Otherwise, having mostly naked women posing awkwardly on or next to a car is a marketing tactic that obviously works or they wouldn't do it.

100 TIMES THIS! One other thing about this that I didn't see you mention, is the way that car enthusiasts are perceived. This has happened to me and I'm sure it has happened to almost every one us. Someone finds out you are a gearhead, and they assume you want your garage covered in pictures like that (or anything else along those lines). Sure I appreciate the female figure as much as the next guy but being a gearhead means I am into cars, not porn.

Besides, think of the paint!!!
On the comical side, some girl posted in the Subaru community asking for people that would allow her to take pictures with their cars, first and only question asked was, "do you plan on touching the vehicle in any way?" Her answer was yes, they followed up with "Piss off I'm not fucking up my paint so you can feel special."

The Hot Wheels and Twitter posts don't cheapen our community? Or how about the meme posts or non-car articles or Poland ball posts? All of those different posts make up this community. and give it an identity. Unfortunately for some, NSFW posts are a part of this community; some enjoy them and some do not, but they are a part of Oppositelock just like all the other posts that some people enjoy and others do not. Hell at least there's a warning and lead image for NSFW posts.

Stop with the reverse chauvinism. It's still chauvinism.
Also, is the letter meant for the models that pose with the cars, the photographers that shoot and direct them thus, the editors that call for and promote the images, or the consumers that create the demand?
The best way to address the issue is to not treat women, or any other humans, as meat. That includes chauvinism, machismo, and suggestions that any girl posing with cars or printers needs a little more "fatherly advice."

I like girls for 2 separate reasons, either because they make me feel happy, or they're very nice to look at.
putting a girl on a car is making me feel like a child looking at a seductive woman. Good in theory, not in practice.

Screw you all.
I love the beautiful curves of a woman. I love the beautiful curves of a car.
I if had a request, it would be to stop with the Photoshopped, high heel wearing fake boob having barbie dolls. Otherwise, bring on the girls.
Rather look at an attractive girl draped over a lowly shitbox than some glammed up, undrivable stanced bro-mobile or another 7 figure peice of billionare-o-mobile.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment of this article. One of the main proponents of the girl-on-car meme on Jalopnik is $kaycog, who posts one of these pictures as a congratulation to whoever gets COTD each day. His (well, I assume "his" rather than "her") persistence makes it clear to women that this site aint for them, and it annoys the hell out of me because I come here to look at cars, rather than to consider the current state of gender politics. Perhaps we should collectively ask him to stop doing that. There are other possibilities that don't alienate or humiliate anyone, like the huge-plate-of-food meme. Perhaps he could be convinced to channel his energy into a more positive alternative.

You hit the nail on the head! It's the two constantly together that is outdated. It doesn't always have to be high horsepower and big boobs.

we should invite the Jezzies next time to 'appreciate the female form' with us in one of those threads. They'll love it.

What about when it's the girl that built the car? Is it still objectification then?

I guess this one was technically 'built' by me, but with her input. She did some heavy front end modification in the rain one Tuesday morning without my permission and it's gone now.

Sarcasm, dude. (It happens to everyone- I once got banned from Flickr because I misinterpreted some guy's sarcastic reply as not sarcastic and flamewar'ed him. Oh Internet.)

Courtney Hansen is a certified car nut, host of Power Block and Overhaulin', but for some reason, because she was an attractive woman, my brain went immediately to "she's faking it", and "the executives just put a pretty face in front of the camera.", and that was wrong of me.
I am genuinely glad that you can recognize the not-so-subtle brain programming we've been subjected to. Hell, I fight that same gut reaction, and I am a woman. How effed up is that?? I want to be taken as seriously as anyone else, which means I push myself to be not-girly, because girly is bad and means you're a faker :[ It's even affecting my car choice... if I got a Mustang, would people assuming it's an auto V6? Why do I care? Because I feel I need to be extra legit to overcome everyone else's gut reaction of "she's a dumb girly faker who doesn't really know anything about cars."
TL;DR: thank you for acknowledging the BS and actively fighting it.

Stop making it difficult for our car-loving daughters, wives, and sisters to integrate into the community without being exposed to the "tits or GTFO" mindset.
Not to be an excessive Gawkerite/Jezebel reader (because normally I'm not), but did you even consider the men who don't find boobies a turn on?
In other words, it's not just women who get offended with the whole "tits or GTFAC" thing. There's the whole heteronormativity piece as well.

I get what you're saying, but I can't say I'm fully onboard. When car design stops mimicing the female form, I suspect models will be less prevalent. But like all other things that have to do with marketing, attractiveness sells. I suspect a couple of things: these supposed women that don't get into cars because of car models and booth babes aren't really automotive enthusiasts, and these same women have no problem with Abercrombie and Fitch models, or David Beckham's Calvin Klein ads.
That said, it's all about respect, I can respectfully appreciate a stripper without making my girlfriend feel awkward, so car shows should be a breeze. Save the fapping and drooling for at home, no matter how teeny that bikini is, she's still someones daughter/sister/mother/aunt.

I was just thinking something along these lines prior to getting my daily Jalopnik fix. I love cars and I love women, but the car slut image of women promoted my males has become tedious for many reasons... But shit, maybe I'm manstruating right now but chocolate spaghetti sounds good and I don't even smoke pot.

We wonder why milleniels aren't into the car scene, maybe they're sick of the "good-ol-boy, wimmens is ornaments" crap?
Looks like you won't be getting any love from whats-her-name, no awards, nuthin'. And I'm sure you're just crushed.

so to speak out on using women as an eye catching tool, you use a woman as an eye catching tool.
This makes perfect sense.
You make good points that I agree with, but it just comes off as hypocritical.

was just talking about this the other day, its basically click bait for magazines, and it IS click bait on the net. I dont want my sister or children to see that in order to be part of the car community they need to dress like whores/ have plastic surgery to look "better", and act like total bimbos.
that, and I enjoy reading car mags, until the last few pages in them where beside every last article are boner pills and bigger ads. its.... disturbing
