lifehacker article today, I know we've chatted about this on oppo before, but anyone want to recommend, with personal experience, a Bluetooth OBDII reader that will not drain my battery? Cheap. And/or recommend some android apps?

Still works. I use it with the Torque lite app, mostly to check and reset engine codes.
Edit: this should be the current link.

interesting, that's the one mentioned in the article with a note about battery drain. Do you leave yours plugged in, or just plug it in when you need to read codes?

I just plug it in when I need to read codes. I have left it in for a couple trips without any problems. The longest any car has been off with that in it was about 2 hours though. If battery drain is a problem, that's a bummer.

I use the exact same hardware/software setup. Mine has been plugged in for over a year, and never had a problem with battery drain, although I've never gone more than 5 days without driving the car. I don't use it very often and mostly forget it's there, but is very handy when CEL.

Same one I have...I've left it in overnight on accident a number of times without a problem but I usually just disconnect it unless I'm going to be logging or checking codes. Never had a problem, but I haven't left it in or 24+ hours with the car off or anything.

what do you drive? perhaps the issue is car specific not specific to the device. anyway, good to hear someone with no history of issues.

Torque pro (needed for custom vehicle strings) and the bafx adapter listed earlier. I leave it in 24\7 and set it to sleep after a period of inactivity. Easy for me as the obd2 port is in the trunk behind carpet.

I had a cheap OBD BT reader (that I never left plugged in, can't comment on battery drain), and I got really sick of its terrible refresh rate. Now I have this one , and it is so much better. You get what you pay for. (Side note, the refresh is great, but it also does depend on the car. I get about 1/10th second data logging is with my 04 Pontiac. My 97 Subaru has a tremendously bad refresh rate.) If you just want to read codes, either will be fine. For data logging, you can't be cheap.

I use the Torque app. And what they say about the user interface being difficult to set up individual screens, it's pretty true. If you have some patience, and understand what you're doing, it's not difficult, just time-consuming. There is a lot that the app can do, however, so I think it is worth it.

Thank you. I love it. I'm not rich or fancy, just love cars and saved a while for this one. Drive it every day. Track it. Drift all winter. It's a great car.
