But why don't the SN-95 and early S197 Mustangs not have sequential taillights standard?? Sure, there are aftermarket versions but they look like rubbish IMO. Has this ever bothered anyone else? And does anyone know why they didn't have the lights until the 2010 Stangs?

Example of aftermarket taillights:

I had a 2010 and a 2011 and now have a 2003 and very much miss it. I felt like I was giving other drivers a treat every time I signaled.

It's my favorite thing that I love about Mustangs! Is that weird or wrong? I would want a Mustang just for the taillights..

That aftermarket set is awful. The timing is off left to right.

I don't know if this is the specific reason but I do know that there were regulatory issues when designing the sequential turn signals.

If I remember correctly, every turn signal needs to be a specific size/have a specific lumen output. If the lights do not meet that standard at any given point (i.e 1 light is not enough but combined with the second sequential light it is) then the lights cannot be used. The 2010+ Mustangs bypassed this ruling by making sure each individual light met the lumen rating. Essentially to get the sequential tail lights, Ford equiped the cars with basically three turn signals. It was brought up in a conversation about the Lincoln MKZ and the fact that it didn't have sequential lights.

Wait. I just notice you said you had a '10 and '11 and now an '03? Why did you go to an '03 if you don't mind my asking?

I buy too many cars. I had the '10 and well, '11 was better. So I got an '11 GT/CS. Awesome car. My significant other really wanted her dream car, a Range Rover Sport. So we traded it and her RX hybrid for one and went down to 1 car for a bit to save some money. Fast forward a year, we had a Lexus IS and a Suburban and I wanted a fun car, so I bought one from an Oppo member .

Ford first used the sequential turn signal on the '64 or 5 Thunderbird.

I don't think they were ever on a Mustang until the body revamp in 2010. I believe they were based on the Mercury Cougars which had them. Either way it was actually the first mod I had on my '08, and the timing and everything works perfectly for me IMO.
