Being a BMW enthusiast is getting harder and harder when the cars sound like shit. Here are some videos to compare. This post was inspired by the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . *Note, I'm not just talking about stock exhausts. But even an after market exhaust on a Bimmer doesn't compare to a MB.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Now, don't go posting a video of a MB sounding bad or a BMW sounding really good. I'm posting this to basically reassure everyone that BMW's M badge doesn't mean what it used to. And MB's AMG badge = torque and thumping exhaust.

BMW should make all their cars sound like this.
Even the X1's.

The M3-4s are a big letdown for me in the sound department. And it's not because there's no way to make a straight six sound good. I can't believe the company that produced the S54 couldn't get that right!

it's all in the factory exhaust tuning, really. The AMG's extra displacement helps too.
Though I've had the chance to open up a couple of E90 M3's. The induction noise is epic.

Much like the S65, the S54 is kinda meh on the exhaust noise, coupled with fantastic induction noises when you step on it.

I agree about the new (turbo) M cars. I have no problem continuing my enthusiasm for my S65 engine, however. =)
I also think it's worth noting that BMW M and AMG aren't really direct competitors with their smaller sedans. The 2, 3 and 4 series M and "M-sport" cars are billed as track-capable and emphasize handling over brute force. The AMGs (like that C63) are the exact opposite - German muscle, tire killers...and all but useless on track.

Lower compression and an extra 2.2L of displacement helps. That's the nature of high hp low torque motors though, they typically don't sound low and throaty.

The E9x's S65 = gutless? You crazy... (I will agree that the OEM exhaust leaves something to be desired, and that the new M3/4 don't sound great.)
The AMGs do sound great, though, especially when tearing around an F1 track.

You've got to get a bigger sub woofer and raise the volume on the stereo in the BMW to get that guttural sound you want.

BMW would probably say it is something about "it is quieter because it is farther away from you on the track."
Honestly, it is just the resonance tuning for the exhaust (besides the obvious difference in engines themselves).

The S62 in my E39 M5, sans those silly, heavy ass mufflers, begs to differ!

That second video just seems like a really poor quality audio recording. No bass at all and clipping at the top end.
Saying that, I agree with the engine noise thing. A lot of people go nuts about the 'hollow' shout of an I6, but as far as I can tell it's mainly BMW engines that do that a lot and I don't particularly care for it. I've heard plenty of other straight 6s that sound plenty beefy enough :)
At the trackday I went to at Brands Hatch the other day there was a host of BMWs tearing around. By far and away the best sounding one was an E36 M3 coupe. Aftermarket exhaust, but that thing was pretty epic :)

Hi SH, can you elaborate more? Interested in what you know, still learning about cars.
What are you referring to in comparison? The BMW M4 to which MB AMG Model?
What is the compression ratio in these two engines for sake of comparison?

previous gen M3 to the previous gen C63. So you're talking the M3's 4.0L V8 at 12:1 compression and the C63's 6.3L V8 at 11.3:1 (meant to type 2.3L extra). Mercedes also does a helluva lot more exhaust note tuning, Audi as well.

Ahhh thanks SH for the info. I am reading up on the cars, and there seems to be an exhaust note flap to control how the car sounds, not as in lowering the volume of the exhaust note but actually changing the note itself. From what I read.
Maybe its what I like, but I rather have my car sounding what it really sounds like from the combination of engine, extractors, pipe, all the way to the end can. Also the air intake box.
What car do you like? What type of exhaust note, intake sound, etc etc that you like from a particular engine model, or car, etc?
I know a lot about Mitsubishi's, and some Japanese cars. Was never really into the unrefined big block min 4.0L engines.

to clarify, unrefined referencing the old american big block muscle cars which shaked and rattled. and didnt really do corners.
