and it had an article about a guy with an Evo VII, who turned it RWD by just disconnecting the front axles and welding the center diff.

Tell me why I shouldn't do this to my Ralliart. I mean, it does use the same drivetrain as the IX, which isn't so different from the VII right? right? guys?

I am aware of how bad of an idea this sounds.

Welding the center diff ensures all the power goes to the rear?

Are these FWD-based AWD cars?

Terribly brilliant idea.

You would still have a drive train loss to the front though, so WHP would not increase, the would simply be RWD and possibly more slidey.

Then you're packing the weight of two non-functional diffs..

So you'll have all the weight with none of the grip. GENIOUS!!!!

I went to a few WRX meets in AZ w/ my brother, when he had his blobeye wagon, and there was a guy there with a bugeye wagon that had done the conversion and was making it into a drift car. I liked the idea of how unique it was, not sure the project ever got finished or if he really made it on to the drift scene (since I know a few of the main guys in the drift scene back there, and I haven't seen or heard of any RWD WRX wagons) Still a cool idea

I think the FF toyko drift car that was RWD was basically just a stock car they took the front shafts off, the ecu sensed a total loss of front "grip" and locked the center diff for rwd. I don't think they did anything else at all.

Its basically what I did with my land cruiser when I had to have my front drive shaft rebuilt. Simply took off the driveshaft and locked the center diff electronically. voila, rwd.

Taking away an Evo's AWD is like taking away it balls, don't take away it balls man thats just cruel.

There was a RWD Drift 2.5 RS Subaru here is Albuquerque. IIRC it wasn't very successful kept blowing up transmissions.

Did he just keep running the 5spds, or did he do a 6spd swap?

I kind of love this idea. They did this on the Evo for the Fast and the Furious movies, FWIW. "Let's make this drift at slower speeds, whoohoo!"

It does seem like it'd get super complicated with the engine's 'puter, though. It's used to directing power to four wheels, and...well, that's not gonna work without some reconfiguring.

I didn't know the IX-era Ralliart was AWD. I always thought those were FWD.

The '08+/Evo X-era ones are AWD, but yeah. Those cars seem pretty complicated. It'd be a big effort, methinks.

...

DO IT FOOL!

Yeah, that'd probably be why. Good transmissions for stock or mild modification, but if you're going out and consistently beating on them (especially with something like drift) they probably won't hold up.

I have the 08+ Ralliart, which uses the Evo IX's drivetrain. Not the IX -era ralliart. FWD to RWD is too crazy for me.

A guy up here does the same for all the Lambos. Disconnect the front, enjoy a RWD Lambo putting down some 1200hp thanks to a pair of turbos.
