I was thinking about the R-Package Miata, and how much I'd like to own a bone stock one. In case you don't know, the R trim is a tasty combination of manual everything, an LSD, Bilstein shocks, and an aero kit... all from the factory. Problem is, R-Packages weren't very common and stock ones are nearly non-existent today.
This got me thinking though. If I could find a base model Miata with the 5 speed and swap in an LSD, I'd have almost the same thing—minus the Bilsteins and the cosmetic aero kit. And I ain't even mad, because I hear the factory Bilsteins were not very good (bone-jarring yet still not great in the corners).
So I'd end up with a manual steering, manual trans, manual windows, zero driving assists, LSD-equipped, 2100 lb FR roadster—with reliability and commonness to pack—for the price of a base NA plus the LSD (~$400).
Miata owners have one of the highest rates of the disease known as "upgrading," but I'd be more than happy to keep this car basic. Only thing I'd think about doing would be replacing the base model's "cement loafer" steel wheels with a light, OEM alternative (such as daises). Might also remove some heavy nonessentials, such as A/C.
That's it. Just a raw-ass car, hell yes.

you see, you will do this. then you will send some money on tires, because this suspension crap aint gunna work was cheap tires, then u will want brakes, and ur gunna have a kickass handler, but no power for the strights. so then ur guna have tht. and the whole process repeats itself.
do it

No. My NA has stock suspension + BF Goodrich Super Sports and it really is a fine setup for tossing the car around mountain roads. Then there's always ZZII's if I want more grip.

ah, so u already have stage 1 of the disease: buy a car.
I kid, I say got for it. LSD always makes stuff more fun.
oh, a limited-slip diff helps too

I'm sayin I have an NA and want another one. The second one would be a stock, bare-bones car (while the current one is top-of-the-line, low miles, weighed down by a hardtop, and already has a couple mods).

I'm talking NA's. Mine was $4500 @ 63k and I'd love to find a base model car for ~$2500

its painful. a base ST for us costs almost 7500 more then for you guys DX
th only vehicle tht escapes this is the 'base' f150. our 22k base version is far nicer then urs, and to option urs up to our specs, its 6000$. thts the only thing we get a break on.

yes, we have 13% sale tax on that too.
the used market seems a little more reasonable. still a little over prices (saab 93 viggen. you can find them in the states for less then 5k (apparently, according to top gear usa) here, ur lucky if its under 7. if you can find one to start off with
