I have a little bit of money burning a whole into my pocket, and being the good jalop that I am, I decided to postpone buying a stupidly big TV for a bit and go all in on preventative maintenance on my old steed.
So far I've decided to get the following things changed: engine oil and filter, gearbox oil, spark plugs, air filter, brake fluid and coolant. Am I missing anything?
What I don't know is whether late '90s v-tec engines need their valve clearance checked/adjusted from time to time or not. A google search didn't come up with conclusive results neither did filing through the service history of my car. Don't all newer engines have hydraulic lifters that make adjusting the valve clearance a thing of the past? Or am I wrong here? Any opinions?
Monkey! Did you ever adjust it on your Civic?

yes/no. I had the mechanic do it when they did my timing belt. While savvy enough to do it myself, it felt like the kind of thing worth paying for. In the end, they did a check of clearances and found nothing that required substantial adjustment. So, that was at ~75,000 miles/14 years. Not sure I've been much help. Nice to be called out by name though :D

That was exactly the answer I needed. I will have my mechanic do it. I don't want to mess with something this substantial. My car is at roughly the same age/mileage right now. So they won't look at me funny when I ask them to do it like as if I asked them to do the blinker fluid. Good to know!

Errrm, the front of a car? Of a Honda Accord CG8, to be specific. Can you phrase your question a little more precise?

We never got that model Accord, so it looked a little weird to me. You have answered my question though.

I think he's asking because the Euro Accord is nothing like ours. It looks very much like an Acura grill with an H badge in it.

Maybe it's a friendly reminder that leaving your lights on is bad for the environment!

Given the current EU Accord (your TSX) that's not a weird observation at all.

It was the first of the "Think globally, act locally" Accords. Japan got a narrow one, Europe this medium sized one, which one generation later became an Acura in the US, and the US got the Big Mac.

Exactly. And this one is from back in the DC2/3.5RL days. Which means that we didn't have anything in that position. The TL was more boxy and European styled.

Something else to consider. Timing belt?

Good question! It was last done in october '07 at 85k kms. Rule of thumb is "every 100k kms or 8 years (due to aging)". I'm now around 120k kms, and therefore still have a year to go. It's not exactly a common fault for these to snap early, so I think I'll bet at it going for another year. It'll defininitely get changed next year together with the water pump and all of the tensioners! But I am contemplating having it done at a proper Honda stealership not my "we do all cars" mechanic. They are more than trustworthy, and this being a rural community, I haven't heard anything but song and praise about them. But still! I've once seen a good car die (not my own, just one I recommended buying, which makes it even worse?) due to a botched timing belt change.
TL/DR: Has been done, will do it next time.

Sounds like you are on top of that. I know several people who have let that go and suffered the consequences.
You don't have to TL/DR: me. I enjoy your comments and posts. :)
BTW. I am assuming you are in Germany. What part of the country are you in? Or, if not Germany, where are you? You have a magnificent grasp of English. I know you are a teacher. Do you teach English?

I am currently in Bavaria. A little bit East of Munich. Just within the so-called "Fat Belt" of the city. A.K.A. the part where the better-off park their families to get a bit of country air but can easily commute. One of perks of living there is seeing a camouflaged Bimmer from time to time, but I stopped trying to yank out the potato to get a SR-20 for you guys, because I usually ended up with a picture of my knees, or my headliner, or my dash while jerking through my lane.
And yes, I do teach English and History.

History, my favorite. Pleased to meet you Herr Schmoll. "Fat belt", the world is pretty much the same everywhere. Glad you do not try to use the camera much. I put my phone on the the passenger seat and Do not pick it up unless I stop first.
