Other factors also contributed to investigators not noticing the defects early on. For example, more than half of the 13 people killed in recalled GM cars were not wearing a seatbelt. Additionally, in four of the crashes which caused six deaths the driver was legally drunk. In another three crashes, the car was reported to be travelling at roughly 40 mph over the speed limit.

I think these statistics apply to all people driving a cobalt.

Yea for the most part, especially the coupes; even more so, and obviously, the SS models.
Just so an SS owner doesn't come and get pissed I'll mention this is just a generalization, similar to how V6 Mustangs are driven by women.

This is the same misdirection McDonald's used to get everyone to associate the coffee spill lawsuit with frivolous litigation. In reality, the woman in that case suffered extremely serious burns and was only suing to cover her hospital bills. Similarly, GM has been pointing the finger at their customers' heavy keychains and seatbelt habits to detract from the fact that they have three model years worth of vehicles affected by a disastrous ignition cylinder failure and their own failure to properly address the problem until it was too late. Like I've said here before, my coworker has an affected Cobalt that shut off every time she hit a large bump or dip like the one at the gate of our parking structure at work. Nothing but the car key on the keychain. They've given her a rental car until they can fix it, but she still swears she will never buy GM again.

Someone really dropped the ball on that one.

a: "You know that fatal crash last week? The one with the Cobalt?"

b: "Yeah."

a: "The airbags didn't go off."

b: "Wait, wasn't he drunk and not wearing his seat belt?"

a: "Yeah, what's your point?"

b: "Well if he was drunk and unbelted then there's no reason to look into why the airbags didn't go off."

a: "But he went head on into a tree at 90 and the airbags failed to deploy. Doesn't that sound like something's wrong?"

b: "Absolutely! He was way over the speed limit! What a terrible, dangerous driver."

a: "But the airbags! Surely if they didn't go off at that speed something is amiss! We need to find out what it was!"

b: "Not at all. They wouldn't have saved him anyway."

a: "...wat?"
