I'd be tempted to put my hand up, but not at the expense of someone else. I haev not updated my wheel for an age so not sure I'd be well setup to actually play.
What do you feel are necessary computer specs and peripheries to play?

If your computer is newer than 2008 you should be good to play. As for taking a code away from someone else I have more than a few. I anticipate it taking me a month to get rid of them all. email me rterps@charter.net and you can see if your system is up to it or not first hand. I say email so that I don't post 1 code and someone else uses it.

Send me an email and I'll send you one of the promo codes. rterps@charter.net Once you get started if you have any questions let me know. It isn't your typical console game there are a lot of things that make a lot more sense with a good explanation.

I have a simple question. Ignoring the obvious like car choices track choices and cost. What's most important to you? A sim that is fun to drive that feels like you feel a sim should feel or good organized competitive racing? Arguments can be made that iRacing is the best of everything except cost. There is one thing though that iRacing does much better than all other sims on the market and that is organized competition. I got fed up with the Forza games because racing against other people wasn't easy and wasn't fun. iRacing makes it easy and the competition is great.
Also I think PRWISE-98 or something like that is active right now to get 3 months for $12. Has to do with the Josh Wise Dover promo.

I'd say my top requirements are price and ease of getting into a good mp match. I hate multiplayer with griefers and bad play, and if a game doesn't have the ability for me to hop in and race with others fairly easily I think I'd be very bored. While ai can help for practice in slow days , I don't really think I'd play against ai much.
The current 12$ for 3 months is totally reasonable, it's the extra tracks and cars. I wouldn't buy anything right away until I perfect the mx-5. I only see myself getting a corvette and some formula car. The tracks are what worry me for series.
Thinking about that the other two seem nice, but it's hard to look past the organization of iracing, and with the constant updating they seem to do there is a lot of content. If they keep doing discounts subscriptions wouldn't be so bad then.

Around July of last year they had the buy 2 years for the price of 1 discount. I believe I ended up paying $80 for a 2 year subscription. They discount bulk purchases (i believe 6 pieces is like 25% off) and you can buy $100 in credits for $75 frequently. When you do the math you can stack the bulk purchase discount on top of the credit discount and you can get $135 in content for $75.
As for the organized racing nothing will top iRacing. That's not to say there aren't flaws in the system but for the most part there are no griefers just amateurs who make amateur mistakes. I outbroke myself on lap 1 this week. Took a car off. Felt bad about it too as I wasn't trying to pass him. Just locked up and went straight on.
Not all of the races are available all the time. For example the F1 car is so challenging that it isn't extremely popular. Because it is challenging most people spend their time in the beginning of the week practicing and then racing on the weekends. Meaning if you wanted to hop on Wednesday night and get a race in with 20 other people in an F1 car that isn't likely to happen. There's always something going on though. Right now the popular road racing series is the GT3 cars. There's an official race every 2 hours in that series and almost always there are more than 30 people registered for it. Z4 is a blast to drive.

see that doesn't sound too terrible. Is it usually only one series that is popular at a specific time?
I definitely understand the beginner thing, crashes even with pros happens, that's racing . I want that realistic experience though, no dumb ai. I want racing where I'm not forced to crash ai because of how it drives.
I have a wheel and I'm certainly craving using it properly learning better racing techniques against humans.

There are I want to say 20 different road racing series. The races for the MX-5 are hourly on the hour. Most of the other series are every 2 hours and they're staggered over that 2 hour period so there's almost always something official at any given time. It takes 8 drivers to make an official race, but more often than not if the race is official there are more than that, but that does depend on the car. For example the Skip Barber is a popular car. It is a slower car and thus easier to drive and thus more popular. I believe the field size is limited to 20 so any time a race has more than 20 drivers they split it up (as many times as necessary) based on driver skill rating (iRating). I think the beginning of season 2 there were frequently ~300 people signing up for GT3 races. That means with a field size of 30 there were 10 different races divided up by driver skill. The opposite of that being the F1 car where there are 5 or 6 popular time slots on Saturday and Sunday and outside of that you will find 4 or 5 other official races with smaller fields.
Races vary in length. Typically the farther up the ladder the longer the races. F1 races are typically an hour and involve a pit stop. GT3 races are mostly sprint races (30 minutes) with 3 different weeks dedicated to 70 minute races that require either a fuel saving strategy or a pit stop. Keep in mind with iracing you get access to engine maps in car while racing in addition to any other in car adjustments you'd have access to. For the V8SC that means roll bar adjustments and brake bias adjustments.

oh and don't forget you can qualify every hour for any race and that time is good for the week and you can try to improve it as much as you want. There are points awarded and championships to compete in but outside of a single official event with the same drivers every week the championship holds a bit less meaning to me than it once did.

If you do decide to take advantage of that $12 3 month promo if you put rterps@charter.net down as your reference it would be greatly appreciated. New member referrals for 3month+ subscriptions are good for a $10 credit.

I'm beginning to drool... STOP! lol, nah see that is why I have been heavily leaning toward iRacing. I have been trying to educate myself, as I am the first to always speak against the "name brand" type of thing, where many view iRacing as just that. But your descriptions and others I've read on other forums seem to really meet what I want, especially the hourly racing.
I need to get to the faster internet connection though, as downloads are currently taking a full day on games with my new computer (at my parents slow connection). Will be moving Sunday though to a place with 12 down, as opposed to 1.5 here.

You realize that multiplayer gaming could more or less be handled by a dial-up modem? The software itself is a significant download, but the actual data transmitted back and forth between the server is minimal. I had a freak out moment when it seemed like ISPs were going to move to data capped services. I needed to know how much data iRacing utilized. It isn't much at all. I think the initial software install is probably in the 2GB range though.
Like I said though it isn't perfect, but it certainly is very good at some of the things it does well. Did I mention the max grid size for some events is 64? They're more or less limited by the number of pit stalls. They have the Spa endurance layout where they utilize both pit lanes and have I believe 64 grid spots. That said I've never seen an event go off with 64 drivers, but it is possible to have happen.

yeah the initial download is certainly my issue. But I might take a full day and get it done. I do know any online game requires very little live data transfer.
Also thanks for the tips, and I will refer you when I pull the trigger!

They've got a road warrior series that is a mixture of events. They have 4 time slots on the weekends they race (20 total out of the year) and tend to link up to signature real world events (2.4 hours of Daytona and 120 minutes of Sebring and 100 minutes of Bathurst). When driver swaps become available there's a good chance they'll have full length endurance races. there will probably be bugs in the system that someone didn't catch, but I'm hopeful for a full Bathurst 1000 this year.
