Someone with a 4th Gen Jetta TDI broke down outside my house. (Edit: yesterday...they are gone now) I went to help, but with that small engine bay, and a bunch of plastic crap (some type of covers) on the bottom of the car (I of course took the plastic top engine cover off) blocking any good views from underneath...I couldn't figure out where the damn lower rad hose was.

I am pretty sure the lower rad hose was completely off the engine block as the car was leaking a full coolant reservoir while idling in about 30-40 seconds.

That's not a lose hose connection or a slightly cracked hose at that rate. That's a hole...

I also don't think that the reservoir was the problem as it wasn't leaking as badly with the engine shut off.

I checked the upper rad hose...it seemed fine, but as I said, I couldn't find the lower hose. What's your diagnosis Oppo?

Can you see the water pump side of the upper hose? Does it leak at all when not running, or just less? I have no idea what the engine bay looks like, I am just asking questions here. sounds like you just need a better view.

It leaked less when not running. This was yesterday, so they have been towed away now.

I did need a better view, the engine bay was extremely cramped, surprisingly. Not like my Cavalier, which is hardly a big car.

sure sounds like it blew the hose. Kind of late in the season for a freeze plug blowing out unless it is overpressured by a stuck t stat. It is pretty busy in there for sure, but you should be able to see where the lower hose connects. Water pump is driven by the t-belt, so look behind the t belt cover, around 3/4 the way down the block . Or just put water to it and see around where it is coming out

Well they are towed away now (this was yesterday which I didn't clarify) but I am glad you think my sight unseen diagnostic was correct. Thanks! T belt = timing belt?

you bet! So the other half of that is, if the water pump was screwed (like the impeller pulled out or something) and he tried to start it that TDI would have ate itself!

Oh shit! Did not know that! Guess it wasn't that...since nothing seemed to have imploded. lol.

That's bizarre. My friend has a MkIV Golf tdi and when I saw his engine bay my first impression was of colossal emptiness compared to my 1.8t GTI. Granted, I wasn't trying to work on anything and it was dark, so I might have been seeing things.
