It dosen't have to even be technically good. I, for example, love Dan Brown novels (The Divinci Code and Angels and Demons) even though, technically they're not that good but they're so fun.

Peter F Hamilition's Commonwealth Saga

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

The Count of Monte Cristo. One of the few books I've read many times. (the unabridged is best if you are into the story) Also, most of Philip K. Dick's books. (particularly Man in the High Castle and do androids dream of electric sheep)

Because Sci-Fi Noir!
