For me to get a 1999 VW Passat with a V6 and a manual trans?
130,000 miles and looks pretty nice for a '99. I'd probably have to sell a kidney to maintain it though.

I almost pulled the trigger on one of these a few years ago... Every now and then I see one and when I see it's a manual I get excited - tells me I should've got one

My neighbor has one. They say it's literally the worst car they've ever owned. Always in the shop and never running quite right. The problems could be isolated just to their car, but it's a 15+ year old German car so that's risky.

It's a 15 year old VW product, so there's going to be issues. But manual V6 German saloon.

I had a 2001 v6 with a standard, was a perfectly good car. Once I did the valve cover gasket that the previous owner had neglected and was causing it to burn oil like a motherfucker. After that tho, great car.

I've decided there's two factories where all VWs are built. One where each one that comes out is junk, and another where they come out and never have a single issue. Because I hear different opinions about how reliable VWs are all the time.

Imho, the problem stems from your average vw buyer now. They are pushing hard for mainstream car buyers, which is traditional Japanese territory and populated by cars people are used to owning for years with little to no problems. So they buy a vw and don't care for it properly, thinking it's basically just like the civic or corolla they had before. But it isn't, because it is German, and as we know if you ignore basic maintenance on a German car, bad things happen. So the well maintained ones give fewer issues, and the rest are rolling timebombs.
