Miata actually sounds like the answer here. Maybe a Honda Fit or Golf can be had as well.

2001 Mercedes S600 Because I see nothing about it having to be reliable.

Too many variables. Where do they live, what are their interests, do they need to tow things, etc. That being said is a southern climate favorable to rear wheel drive this:

I would've otherwise suggested this.

Kinja'd!!!

2001 Camry Gallery Edition. One of my favorite cars of all time. For some reason, it just looks kind of classy compared to the normal beigeness of all Camrys.

Miata or 944 both under 10000 both fairly cheap on gas 944 is more practical with the huge hatch and 4 seats miata is more reliable.

My g/f had a Fit as her daily, and those can be found for under $10k easily. My second choice would be a Mini.

Seriously, a 30 year old transaxle Porsche as a sub $10K DAILY DRIVER?

Are you serious?

Under 10K for purchase, perhaps, but a 30 year old car has either problems with non-use, or high mileage... and a transaxle 944 is not an inexpensive car to repair.

And if you need it to get you to work, that means you need it to be repaired quickly WHEN, not if, it needs work... and that is $$$$.

10K will be surpassed quickly if the car needs a clutch change, or a torque tube bearing replacement, and if it is a 951 (944 Turbo), the fuel mileage AND the budget go out the window faster than the car accelerates.

I wouldn't even recommend a sub-$10K base-986 Boxster with full history, due to maintenance costs.

And I wouldn't recommend any car more than 10 years old in general, and definitely not more than 10 years out of production for lack of spare parts to get back on the road in short order.

944 may be a decent option for Fun Vehicle Friday... not daily driver monday.

For one person... why not a coupe? Why cart around extra doors merely for tradition's sake? (assuming single or married without children, or in addition to a larger family car)

RWD: Miata or maybe a Chrysler Crossfire. (a Merc SLK with more depreciation and either a fixed or folding canvas roof)

FWD: Acura RSX, or any other FWD coupe like it... Civic, tC, Tiburon, etc...

AWD... Subaru Impreza or Lancer Ralliart are about it, and mostly sedan only, unless one goes 20th-century for a GC8 Coupe or Eclipse TSI, aside from a small CUV.

I kind of wish Volvo C30 had depreciated a bit more... it is still ~$12-15K.

I've been DD'ing mine for the last two years just fine? And I think I've still only spent around 8-9k on it in that time so is say it's a viable choice.

Two words...

borrowed time.

It also depends on what you spent on the car in the first place, and how much you've spent on maintenance.

One failed rare part away from having the car in the shop for either a lot of money, or a long time, or both... no way to rely on a car everyday.

luck can't really be grounds for a solid recommendation.

If you can't afford two of that particular Porsche, you can't afford one of them. A Porsche mechanic taught me that one, about 944s, as I have wanted one since I was a teenager.

Porsches aren't inexpensive cars, either up front or afterward, one way or the other, sometimes both.

I bought it for 4 and a half have done a lot of preventative maintenance and have saved money by doing 98% if the work myself

Kudos to you for being capable and equipped to do that much work on a sophisticated older car for yourself.

I have long wanted one... but never been able to afford to pull that trigger, always more pragmatic, practical, pressing priorities.

I've long thought it would be fun to mash up the front half of a 968 with the back half of a 944 S2 or 951... I prefer the angular quarter windows, tail lights, and under-spoiler of the earlier cars... 968 softened a bit too much aft of the side doors, IMHO, but I like the sleek front end, and the 928-style headlights, and the big 3.0 DOHC engine and 6-speed transaxle.
