"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

This 1999 Oldsmobile Aurora is currently listed for sale near me. I am very tempted by it because it is a comfy, weird, V8 sedan loaded with toys, it has just over 71k miles on it, and yet it is priced at under five grand, at least two grand short of anything else I'm looking at. I want to know specifically about performance and build quality. Also, would I be better off spending an extra $2500 for a Lexus or a Volvo with similar mileage? Any other thoughts on the car are welcome.

Helluva deal! The thing is mostly with Lexus and Volvo is that they tend to be slightly overpriced.

The 1st gen Aurora is kinda nice. I remember at the time they came out, GM was hyping the fact that the unibody was stiffer than Mercedes and Lexus. No idea on reliability.
If you get this one, whatever the hell this dealer badge is (does it say 'Beoooo'?) needs to go.

It says "Reagan" and yes, I noticed it and it would be the first thing to go.

check for rust. Buicks at the time had unibody rust issues. Not sure if it applies to Olds but have them put it on a lift for you and walk around under it.

It's a great car until the repairs stack up. But I have a massive soft spot for it and the riviera of the era (above). It was a last gasp by some of the best in GM to actually try and live up to their bragging. These two were basically put on the road to look like concept cars and prototypes that actually got made. They look only "modern" now but consider what cars looked like pre-1995. Go ahead, I'll wait............Yeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhhh....still pretty damn 80s. The riviera and Aurora were the cars that kicked GM's entire design division forward, essentially. So now they look like any other car from recent years but back then......they looked like spaceships next to cars like these that they shared dealership space with. Again, in 1995, the Aurora and Riviera were next to these.
I'm amazed more senior citizens didn't have heart attacks that year. Can you imagine grandma coming in for a new oldsmobile 88 and seeing the aurora next to it?!?!?!

My mom had a '95. They're very nice. The engine really likes to rev. Its more fun to drive than any car this big and this FWD has the right to be. The down side is they can be quite pricey to maintain. So, you decide!

I just found that video maybe ten minutes before you posted it. This car has no right to sound that good.
