That !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! story on the front page has got me thinking about dashcams... Anybody here use them? I've always just kinda dismissed the idea as being for:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

(a) People who think entirely too much of their driving and deem it worthy of recording.

(b) People who do dumb shenanigans and record them...presumably to post the videos to whatever fanboy forum applies to the make of their car and so garner praise from other intellectually challenged individuals.

(c) People who live in Russia.

But now I'm rethinking that position... What's Oppo's opinion? Useful? Stupid? Overkill? Seems like it would be easy enough to live with if it just records any time the car is on and you never need to bother with it unless you need data off it (like, say, if you get crashed into by a Border Patrol truck...), and provided it can be reasonably integrated into the dash so as not to take up too much space or block your vision. It's pretty unlikely you'll ever need it, but if you ever do it could be the difference between a stuff penalty you don't deserve and proving your innocence (or I suppose you could also just as easily incriminate yourself, but let's look on the sunny side...).

After a run in with a crazy paper delivery guy, I got one. Caught some interesting things, but nothing to write home about:

Playlist on YouTube of all my videos.

I really like the idea of having one. I just feel like 99% of the time it wouldn't be used, but if something like this ever happened, you suddenly might wish you had one.

I do see the issue with hooning on public roads and self-incrimination.

My best friend and I sometimes set up his Go Pro facing rearward on the front dash. Simply because we get into the most hilarious discussions and the most hilarious things happen (not dangerous, just conversation mostly). We should probably turn the camera around though.

Cool! Is it pretty low maintenance? I think if I had to manually set it up every day or fiddle with it in some way, I'd just never end up using it. I see from your YouTube channel you say it's a 'cheap Made in China dashcam' is that in a good 'yay, great price!' or a bad 'argh I hate this piece of crap' sort of way? I wouldn't want to pay much for one either :P

Funny, this story convinced me to get one as well. I frequent a great site wirecutter, and they had an updated story on various dashcams. Going to order TWO over the weekend. Think of it as cheap insurance.

Yay great price, worked good when new.

But since the market has taken off, you can find a much better one for the same price or a little more. Most need no fiddling. Just set it up initially, plug it in, and it'll turn on and record when you start the car, and shut off when you turn the car off. Providing your power outlet is switched with the ignition. Or you can hardwire them. Some will turn themselves on if the sense motion, or a collision, or both.

I have one. It's great for recording when people are being jackasses, although I haven't caught a crash with it yet.

Ah, gotcha. Might be too late to turn on if the camera's already sensed a collision ;)

Either way sounds like there's some variety in actuation so there's gotta be some decent options out there. Thanks for the advice!

How do you like it? Any favorite features or hated bugs?

Well if you get hit from the front, it'll turn on from motion detection first :P

Also might come in handy if the camera catches a hit and run, as the car pulls away. OR, vandals, small bumps from parallel parking, etc.

I have no issues with it. Dashboard mount, 90min of recording at 4k resolution, a charged battery lasts for several days of recording, wide field of vision

What a fun little town you live in. At least the town you cut through in the modified Chevy. What kind of dash cam do you have? Do you notice it?

I paid $50 two years ago. I have it tucked up nicely behind the rearview mirror on the passenger's side. From the driver's seat, and outside the car, it's barely noticeable. I ran the power wire up into the headliner and down along the A-pillar, so no wires are in my field of vision either.
