California State Route 1 — alternatively the Coast Highway, Cabrillo Highway, Pacific Coast Highway, or the PCH — is perhaps one of the ultimate drives in the US. That is if you're not stuck behind 10 cars trailing a diesel soot-spewing 1970s Winnebago with about even odds of summiting the next small rise.
Photo details: A then new-to-me BMW E36 M3 in Big Sur back in 2007 during a road trip from SF to LA. Shot on a crappy point-and-shoot hence the low resolution. Edited via Photoshop to remove any indication of the vacation traffic that frequently snarls what is an otherwise amazing driving route.
Full resolution photo and more content is available on my site !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

That drive is so awesome.
I did it once. In a BMW.
But it was an X5 :P

haha I posted a throwback yesterday from a friend of mine, at Big Sur in a Jag 420G back in the days. I havent driven it in a while but I miss driving the PCH. Last time was in a 63 VW Bus...

For part of the drive I was "stuck" behind an old E-Type... loved hearing the roar of that straight 6

I did it in a rented early 2000's CTS with warped rotors. It was still a great drive!

Make it happen! I'll be moving back to CA in a few months and will definitely be doing the drive many more times, but unfortunately not in this M3

Well, I doubt my M3 would make it from Washington all the way to PCH, but when it ever has to make a final voyage, I would like to do that.

That drive is great I have done it in both a rented camaro convertible SS and my personal Mercedes. To be honest I would recommend a convertible for anyone thinking of driving it. It does not have to be a performance car but a convertible is just the way to do it
