I feel like it should be larger than a $100 fine. I mean I know he has the cost of fixing a dent and replacing windows and it's BMW so what's that $9,000? lol.
But really, a $100 and it could have prevented putting out a fire, it's just ridiculous.

I understand how stupid and illegal it is to park in front of a hydrant but surely there is a solution that doesnt involve thousands of dollars of damage to a car.
Why doesnt the fire department have some portable kind of jack or lift and put the car on two rollers and push it out of the way? Boot the thing and make the owner pay a huge fine like $500 or something.

So you illegally parked your brand new car in front of a hydrant, then a fire broke out where the rescue crews needed to use that hydrant, forcing them to physically pick up and move your car off the curb and break your windows so they could access the hydrant to extinguish the fires, and your mad??? If I were one of the home owners whos house was destroyed I would hire a good lawyer and sue you for impeding the fire crews, my house could have been saved if you hadn't been so self centered to park in front of and damn near on top of a fire hydrant.

Is it just me or does $100 seem like not enough? I guess as a normal parking infraction, and this doesn't happen everyday, but since they actually needs the hydrant I think the fine should go up. I hope they put a coupleast extra dents in

Yeah I get that. But it would take like a few more seconds to get the jack out of the truck. Find a place to put it under the car and lift it up with some pneumatic action while two fire men push it away from the hydrant.

The sheer size and weight of a portable jack that could properly lift and move a whole vehicle would be insane. Besides the fact that Fire trucks are already packed to the brim with fire fighting tools, the last thing they need to do is play parking lot as well. This guy was apparently so close to the curb that they could barely get the hose on the hydrant, if they were to try and bend the hose around the car it would have so many kinks that they would be better trying to battle the blaze with a garden hose.
Add in the fact that this fire had, by that point in time, engulfed three houses, and multiple departments were on site, this guy had ample time to realize that he had been parked in front of a hydrant and move his precious car. IMO he got of easy for being a dumbass.

Because doing all that (if it's even possible) takes time , and time is not something firefighters have to spare.
Personally, they could have given it the Judge Dredd treatment and I'd be perfectly okay with it.

The other option would have been pushing it out of the way with the fire truck, but then they'd have to polish the scratches out of the truck's bumper.
(BTW, if this comes out as sarcastic, it isn't. I know many fire fighters. Scratching the truck is a big deal)

I really don't think it should be the fire departments responsibility to buy and expensive jack and train fire fighters how to use it. Just don't park in front of a hydrant.

I don't disagree that its easy. But government bureaucracy, OSHA, unions etc make things more complicated than they need to be. Again I think you are getting the burden of action backwards hear. First responders should take the easiest and cheapest way out.
Frank Grimes

I understand time is precious. and it is possible. How long does it take to smash two windows realize there was a kink in the hose still then get a bunch of firemen to lift the car to move it a bit so the hose wasnt kinked?
Frank Grimes
> FJ80WaitinForaLSV8

I dont think the cheapest and easiest way or the fastest was to smash two windows run the hose through the car hook up the hose and then realize it was kinked and gather some guys around to lift the car away then unkink the hose.

CAR_IS_MI

04/11/2014 at 14:24 | 2 |
But the issue at hand is time. Time to break window with the spring loaded glass punch <3 seconds. Time to lift a car, align 4 dollies, and then push it safely out of the way > 2 minutes. When peoples homes and lives are on the line, responders can not and should not have to waste their time moving your car because you couldn't be bothered to properly park it in the first place.
user314
> Frank Grimes
04/11/2014 at 14:25 | 1 |
All told, maybe a minute.
How long would it take to jack up one side of the car, slide in the rollers, jack the car onto the rollers, move the jacks, and repeat for the other side? Just remember while the firefighters are farting around with this Rube Goldberg shit, people's lives are at stake .
Seriously, you have way more compassion for this asshole than you should. He broke the law, and in doing so endangered people. Fuck 'im.
Frank Grimes

Rube goldberg? as in the those crazy machines? you are comparing a complicated machine to putting a jack under a car and lifitng it up and lowering it down again? have you ever lifted a car onto dollys it takes like 30 seconds if you are very slow.
I dont have a much compassion on him as you think I do. I think moving the car away right from the start would take less time and less effort. I think from the very start the very root of the problem is idiots parking in front of fire hydrants whether they are marked or not is incredibly stupid a selfish.

This was up the street from my apartment. The dent is from when they pressurized the pump. I was there when they were trying to slide it over so the hose could get straight:
there was definitely talk of a non-tabacco smoking device, and I saw a fairly grimy gatorade bottle in the cup holder that might or might not have resembled said smoking device. I'll let you guys use your imagination.

So how long does it take to do that window breaking hooking up the hose procedure and have it fail because its kinked anyways and then have to lift the car out of the way with a bunch fire fighters?
crowmolly
> Frank Grimes
04/11/2014 at 15:53 | 0 |
In my opinion $500 is a slap on the wrist.
Seconds matter. I worked at a fire safety lab running tests and stuff can go from mild-moderate to nasty in seconds. This was an eight alarm fire and chances are the blaze was endangering other buildings in the area as well. That's also not taking into account any personal injury or danger that may be going on.
Being nice or careful is not a concern for the FD.
Frank Grimes
> crowmolly

They had to move the car anyways.
crowmolly
> Frank Grimes
04/11/2014 at 15:56 | 0 |
By hand, yeah, as breaking the windows and sending the hose through was still not enough.
Note that they tried to do without moving the car first and then did it when they had to.
Frank Grimes
> crowmolly
04/11/2014 at 16:04 | 0 |
yeah my point is if you pull up to a hydrant and there is a car there it might be faster to just move it out of the way
crowmolly
> Frank Grimes
04/11/2014 at 16:09 | 0 |
I get that part. :)
I think they have to act in the best interest of what they are trying to save and that involves taking the shortest path to solve a problem. Moving the car completely out of the way would take more time than breaking out the windows and bumping it forward.
Frank Grimes
> crowmolly
04/11/2014 at 16:15 | 0 |
I understand that as well. My argument is a weak one when a fire is going who give a crap about a car?! But once I read they had to move the car anyways and how fast the air bag jacks are I thought maybe it might be best to just move a car and not have to destroy it.
The car is no longer a problem at all and the time saved from breaking windows and unkinking the hose and the time it took to think about moving the car and then doing it it might be faster to just move it from the get go.
crowmolly
> Frank Grimes
04/11/2014 at 16:23 | 0 |
I dunno. I don't know how fast they could realistically move the car out of the way vs. doing what they did, and if it is faster, if the cost to implement and keep up with said solution is appropriate given how uncommon this exact type of situation is.
user314
> Frank Grimes
04/11/2014 at 18:21 | 0 |
The point you keep missing is they are fire fighters, not a fucking NASCAR pit crew. It's not their job to move some self-centered jagoff's car.
Frank Grimes
> user314
04/11/2014 at 19:28 | 0 |
The point you keep missing is you dont know eveything and apparently still cannot comprehend how easy and quick it is to move a car. Whether it is their job or not is not the issue the issue is having quick access to the hydrant which thier solution seemed to cause a problem in having to eventually move the car anyway.
