So I stumbled upon this,
It is a 89 auto Supra with under 50k miles for only 2,500 bucks. Is this for real, or a scam or something? I don't know values of auto Supras too well can someone help me out?
And sorry for no picture I'm in class

For one, it is an '89 (the less desirable).
For two, it is a non-turbo.
For three, it is an automatic.
To me, that price seems about right.

Why is an 89 less desireable? I don't know much about Supras but my roommate had one and I'm looking for a new DD. I don't mind repairs but I just want a different car.

From the slight research I have done, they seem to be heavy, slow (for a sports car), and do not handle too well.

1) Late 89s are the very desirable.
They have the cross-member that supports the 1JZ/2JZ engines, they have the updated body and interior, and NO airbag. 90-92's have airbags and are heavier, but 91/92's have the best interior colors (plus you could get a factory sunroof).
2) It doesn't matter. You can swap over a turbo harness/ECU and run everything fine (what I did on my 89 NA->7MGTE swap)
3) Yes that sucks, but the auto is pretty strong. Plus MKIII Supras were offered with W58s or R154s, which are easy to swap in.
4) GREAT price. It's HARD to find a low mileage MKIII Supra, but they DO last forever. My 89 had 254k when sold, my 86.5 had 252k, and my 92 had 213k.

LOVE MKIII Supras. I used to have 3! Great cars, but take care of the head gasket first. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Wife's 86.5 targa (1991 7mge) 5 speed
my 89 targa NA-> 7mgte bpu 5 speed
1992 7mge -> 2JZGE 5 speed

Well then, I've been lead astray by the internets. Maybe I was thinking of the MKII?
I stand (or sit actually) corrected. Thank you for the education.
To the OP, I apologize for my ignorance and speaking when I should not have.

Unfortunately the MKIII is seen as the red-headed step-child of the Supra family. I love them the most to be honest, but due to their headgasket issues, they're treated like slime.

Good looking Supras! I wish my wife would drive a 5 speed Supra. The add says he put in a new head gasket. Do they blow often?

Hmm, alright. It would just be a DD though, I prefer to stick with manufacturers I know though

Thanks! She bought it for the sole reason to learn stick in it (also, she LOVED mine, especially the targa).
Yes. It's not "if" it's "when." The problem is most folks will replace the headgasket AFTER it has blown, at which point the coolant has mixed with the oil and circulated through the engine. After they replace the HG, they forget the rod bearings have been compromised and soon they get rod knock. At which point they give up on the car. I've seen it happen literally dozens of times.
The block is iron and the head is aluminum. So if the HG has blown, you may have to machine the head, then get the proper-thickness metal headgasket (if head was machined) AND use ARP head bolts torqued down to 80 lb in proper order, and then again after a few heat cycles. It is a lot of work, but if it's done right, your engine will last forever.

Is it true that the head gaskets blow because of improperly torqued bolts from the factory? I think I read on Wikipedia that is was a problem with the 7M.

Yeah, headgasket material was changed from asbestos to steel, I think, at the last minute, but the force wasn't updated to reflect, and there you go.
