yep. The 2.5's are as far I know. I saw one drive by, and it had a similar (yet a lot baffled) grunt. It had a 2.5 badge on the back.

Yessir. I had the chance to drive one once that was equipped with a 5 speed. It actually tore around pretty damn well. I was impressed!

They sound really nice. Making me reconsider my car choice!

They're really not that good. They sound okay, but that's it. Limited aftermarket support means you will ALWAYS lose in a build-off to the 2.0 TFSI. Really, it wasn't a very good engine in basic form. Has potential as a hi-po screamer as the TT-RS proved but not at the econobox level and not without loads of upgrades that, at that price, would give you as much power or more on the 2.0T motor and have plenty left over for chassis and handling upgrades.

Yup, my mom has the 2.5L 5-pot in her jetta, and it's attached to a 5 speed. Love, love, love driving it! such a blast!
Also, the engine is somewhat related to another VAG product, the Gallardo's V10! (Although, it's like the bastard child of the 3rd cousin of the Gallardo V10)
Still, the 170 horse engine is a little beast! helps the Jetta keep up with GTI's!

I know one company that makes turbo kits for the engines, if you need the extra poke. Don't know how much power the can take. It does look very nice though.

Only 170hp? I was expecting 200+ from a 2.5l. A little dissappointed, still sounds excellent!

haha ya they're fun with a stick, but you should stick with what you have!
My sister almost bought the one I'm talking about, but the electrical system was a disaster. My friend had the same car only a model year newer than the one we looked at and the electrics were garbage in his too so he got rid of it.

It was the "mid range" engine between the anemic 2.0L with 115hp, and the 2.0 TSI with 200hp. It is no more, however. Replaced by a 1.8L TSI, pushing the same horsepower
And I will agree. pound for pound, it was the best sounding car in the $21,000 dollar range when we bought it. Also, it's torque is delivered high up (4,200RPM's) so it pulls very, very well! An exsaust, tune and intake would probably get it over the 200horse barrier

For what they are, they're fine, but yeah if you want to throw aftermarket money at it, you'll quickly run out of things to buy and few of them are actually worth it in the first place.
My DD commuter car is a MKVI Golf with the 2.5 and the 6AT, and all I think it needs is a CAI to help with the sluggish throttle response from a stop and a cat-back setup for better sound. I know you can buy headers and turbos and all sorts of other things but IMO you aren't getting much back for what you put in. Like you said, the 2.0 TFSI is just much more flexible in what you can do to it, but you do have to pay to get to that level in the first place.
I'd focus on suspension and lighter wheel/tire combos, and maybe some OEM+ convenience things that my car didn't come with but could be added easily.

In the US didn't they drop the old "2.slow" along with the MKIV? MKVs and MKVIs are just 2.5L —> 2.0 TDI with the 2.0 TFSI being GTI/GLI only. Or at least I thought this was true.
I had a MKIV Golf with the old 2 liter and it was barely adequate, if I am being nice about it

nope
Sadly, you can still buy a Jetta with a 2.slow.
I know two girls at my school who have a 2012 and a 2014 (still on dealer plates) jettas, with that engine

Oh my god, you're right.
At first I thought it might be the NA 2.0L FSI and went to check the specs on the VW site, and there it is: the old-ass, 8-valve, crossflow MPI! How they are claiming 34 MPG with that engine is also beyond me.
At least it's only the S trim that has that engine available, and it's only in the Jetta and nowhere else. Still, that is crazy. But I guess when you want to undercut the Corolla, this is part of how you do it. Taking leather interior and multilink rear suspension off the table on the lower trims will help you get there, too. The S trim as seen above is $2k cheaper than the SE at $16,895.
I'm glad VW didn't decide to gimp the Golf as part of it's North America strategy.
