I knew this day would come. I saw it coming. Everything was rusted, nothing worked well. All your shifts had to be double clutched. A/C was nonexistent, someone stole your radio, the soft-top was mostly duct tape.
Yet I still grieve. Even though you weren't mine, you were a faithful companion, my daily driver. Part of the family, a true friend.
It was not the rugged Rubicon, not the Moab, it was not even a light trail. You have seen much tougher terrain. You do not deserve to go out like this.
I tried to avoid them, you fought a noble battle. But even off-road vehicles such as you, my mighty YJ, are no match for these Chicago potholes.
So now, possibly for good, I have to say, farewell dear friend.

(taken with my potato camera, it is deeper than it looks)
TL;DR/Summary : Chicago potholes messed up my YJ's front suspension pretty badly. To fix it up will probably cost more than the car is worth, possibly multiple times more (it wasn't worth much to begin with).

As someone who owns a TJ and still dodged potholes to no avail, I know your pain. My Mazda being 2.5" off the ground has given me much practice.

Can't you claim off the Chicago council or whatever it is over there.
Here if you damage your car in a pothole deeper than a certain depth (I believe 1.5cm or something) and someone had previously reported the presence of said pothole to the highways authority then liability is on the highway authority or local council to repay for damage incurred from it and to repair. Its in a way an encouragement to repair the holes.

They can only cover the damage to a certain extent. And I have to prove to them somehow that it was indeed a pothole that was responsible for ALL of the damage. Filing a claim with them, from what I heard, can take a very long time to process. In short, the city really does not want to pay for anything, whether it be claims or fixing potholes. So for now, I'm without a DD

Sorry about that fella. I suppose with the age of the car some of the damage could come down to wear and tear and that some components were on their way out anyway but still push for an insurance inspection and a statement from your garage to how they both believe the damage was caused. I hope it gets sorted out and your back on the road soon.
A guy at work was driving his daughter's car when it clipped a pothole. Needed a new tyre, new alloy wheel and adjustment. Took nearly three months but they were paid back in full and were required to fix that pothole as soon as was reasonably available or the council would have to pay out of their own pockets as their insurance would not cover any further damage.
