Some dude is selling 8 classics (912, Type 1, SL Merc, BMW 2002) for $120k on craigslist right now...but what if the buyers were a group of 8 folks who each put in $15k and their names in a hat. Would you risk the chance of overpaying for a Bug to get a deal on a 912 or W113 SL?
The full list is: 1969 Porsche 912, 1968 Porsche 912 targa, 1967 Porsche 912 targa, 1963 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL W113, 1973 BMW 2002 , 1961 VW Type 1, 1962 VW Type 1, 1963 VW Type 1 and the seller is asking $120,000 for the entire lot. Find it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Imagine for a minute, that someone was to launch a kick starter or indie go-go campaign with 8 available spots at $15k each. After the requisite number of folks signed up, the deal would be done and all buyers would show up for a big warehouse party and put their name in a hat. No matter what, everyone would go home happy....unless you got stuck with the one of the Beetles. But still...Better yet, would you put $150 in for a 1/100 chance of winning one?

I'd definitely go for the $150 1/100 chance of getting something :) that'd be a kickass idea. It's not a massive loss if you don't get anything, and you'd get a kickass deal if you'd won Beetle or no Beetle.

Someone should really do crowdfunding campaign for this. Any discount from the asking price you can negotiate from the seller is used for the party, expenses and profit for the "organizer."

Which of those cars is a NP at $15k?

Excellent idea :) I wonder if there's a business plan in that. Buying a range of cars in bulk and then setting up a raffle for them.
I'd certainly waste a colossal amount of money on that :)

Great idea. And for some reason it reminds me of this classic joke of a boy and his donkey at a raffle:
A city boy, Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day.
The next day the farmer drove up and said: "Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The donkey died."
Kenny replied, "Well then, just give me my money back."
The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already."
Kenny said, "OK, then just unload the donkey."
The farmer asked, "What ya gonna do with him?"
Kenny: "I'm going to raffle him off."
Farmer: "You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"
Kenny: "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he is dead."
A month later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "What happened with that dead donkey?"
Kenny: "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 a piece and made a profit of $998.00."
Farmer: "Didn't anyone complain?"
Kenny: "Just the guy who won. So I gave him his $2 back."

I would put in $1 for a 8/120,000 chance of winning a car.

Isn't that what they do in airports? :)

Aren't those all worth roughly the same? And problem is, you have six chances out of eight of getting a Beetle...

I was looking at this ad last night and talking to my son about it. I figured buying in bulk I'd offer $80,000. Who knows how long these things have been sitting or how much work they need. The raffle idea is interesting. The lower the buy-in price the better. I'd feel better about losing $150 than I would losing $15,000.

So you're right, but this would be slightly higher price for better chances, and crusty old cars from deceased people's collections :)
Pretty niche I must admit, but a niche I fit into perfectly :)

The 912s and the SL...maybe the 2002 depending on condition.

Don't think of it as LOSING $15k - because you'd still get a car. Think of it as an experience. Included in the $15k would need to be lodging, a party, and a full tank of gas for you to drive home. I'm not saying this is a good idea...just that you could probably find 8 people to "roll the dice".

I fear with my luck I'd go home with a beetle. This ad shows the cars location about a 30 minute drive from where I live.

I thought about doing something like this before. When I looked into it, i believe it might fall under a states lottery laws. AKA it gets very convoluted and people can get in trouble, especially because of the high $$ amount. i don't know if there are any Lawyers that know about where this falls.

Pick up a copy of Robb Report, they do auctions like this ALL. The. Time. Kind of a scam as the owner can somewhat guarantee a particular person wins, who's to argue?
