Kinja'd!!!

This was my 1966 Mustang. I say was because about three weeks ago a construction worker decided to turn left across two lanes of traffic without looking to see if anyone was coming — unfortunately for me, I was. His insurance company (of course) is putting a very low value (well under $20k) on the car, which means that I will need to find an appraiser of my own. If anyone has any recommendations in the DFW area, I would appreciate hearing them. Thanks!

Oh man. That's so shitty.

I wish I knew someone, but all I can say is I'm sorry that had to happen to such a gorgeous car. Get another classic if you can't save this one. They're too fun to give up on.

What was your mileage? Rebuilt / restored recently?

V8 or the 6?

I haven't negotiated a classic, but I have been able to get above initial offer on all 3 cars I have totaled (2 not at fault, 1 I screwed up a turn). 2 of them I got more than what I paid and it was 100% fair to me, and honestly the insurance company.

That's so sad. What a pretty little Stang. Good luck with appraisal on it.

Have you looked at Hagerty.com? They have a great evaluation tool that might work.

Try Stated Value Auto Appraisal , located next to Lone Star Classics in Fort Worth.

Who is your insurance company?

Hagerty's will put you in 1 of 4 categories. He would really need somebody to give a number for a particular car.

To the OP, I would be more than happy to get you a result for your car using the Hagerty tool, just know that it might not do much to help your cause.

Thanks for the offer. It was in great condition, had won various awards at local/regional car shows. Given the options (289, manual, air conditioning), Haggerty lists the value anywhere between $20,416 for Condition 4 (which my car certainly was not) to $48,720 for Condition 1. The other guy's company won't even offer the $20,000, which is laughable. So I really am going to need a written opinion from someone who has inspected the car.

Can't help you with the appraiser. Just wanted to add 2 cents for anyone else that stops by - always state a value on any older car in much nicer than 'survivor' condition. I have stated values on both of my classics (both with Hagerty) that didn't even need an appraiser! I am familiar with the market on both of my classics and stated an appropriate value for each.

Good luck getting it! Do not accept any check from the other company unless it's for the right amount. Often accepting the check implies that you accepted the amount as a final value! (at least it used to be that way. Maybe it's changed)

My insurance is through Classic Auto, and they have been great. The other insurance company already has acknowledged their guy was completely at fault so I would rather just deal with them.

Did you have an agreed value policy, where the paperwork itself expressly states "agreed value" and not actual cash value or something along those lines?

That's awful news, but I hope your little 'Stang is back on the streets soon!

On a somewhat similar note, your accident reminded me of another long-time Porsche owner who's '68 was hit pretty well in the front quarter panel. The damage was not extensive but the owner never adjusted his car's insurance value in the 10+ years he owned it. Needless to say, his insurance company is very close to writing the car off. :(

Yes, my policy is agreed value — which is slightly more than I paid for the car and substantially more than what currently has been offered by the other insurer. If I have to, I can resort to my carrier. But since the other guy has admitted fault, I'd really like to proceed with his company to avoid subrogation issues (there ultimately is going to be a significant medical claim) and to get the real value of the car — my bad for not insuring it for even more than I did, but this was my first classic car purchase so live and learn.
