Footage of an underwater nuclear test with running commentary from the filmmaker. The title mentions shots Wahoo and Umbrella which were both performed in 1958 as part of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information to be found regarding these tests, at least with my couple minutes of Google. What I do know is that the warhead for this test was suspended underwater, and that the test was performed to determine the effect on ships in the area of an underwater nuclear explosion. The video is part of this article on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Crazy that they were only around 2.5 miles from the blast site, even if it was done underwater. I certainly wouldn't want to be that close. Granted we know a lot more about radiation and nuclear weapons now than we did then.

Water is a very effective radiation shield, especially for neutrons. I doubt they received much beyond environmental levels if any at all.

If there were nuclear material just sitting under the water I would agree with you. But the explosion would have launched all sorts of radioactive particles into the air. And the immediate concern of wondering if the wave is going to take out the tree your in would be an immediate concern.
