It makes no sense, but I feel more racist now.

I'm not a country fan at all, but all my neighbors are, and they constantly have this stuff streaming from campfires, and other assorted beer-fueled events. When I say "stuff" I mean the songs you would expect to hear from a campfire, not overly poppy, not overly twangy or depressing. "Yeehaw drinkin' songs" is what I call them.

Because of this, I know all the standards, but only vaguely. Hits include, but are not limited to:

"ass-in-the-water-feet-in-the-sand"

"wagon-wheel"

"Pontoon-boat,"

"The more I drink"

"Ah, another Jimmy Buffet song"

"Can't tell if Chesney or Buffet song"

"Red solo cup"

"Ride a cowboy"

And many more!

I had no idea NO IDEA Darius Rucker sang that wagon wheel song until recently. I may not have been a fan of Hootie and the Blowfish, but they were pretty good songwriters. I remember the day I figured it out. I was like, "Holy shit, Rucker went country, what a brave motherfucker. You can't often jump genres like that and be successful, that must be a GREAT song." Then I was like, "Holy shit, a black dude went country, what a brave motherfucker. You can't often jump genres like that and be successful. That must be a GREAT song"

I don't like a lot of the drinking country (probably a by-product of the fact that I don't drink) but I do enjoy sitting around a campfire or firepit and crankin some country.

And Darius is the man. I didn't really listen to him until Wagon Wheel because I was like "Hootie singing country? Hell naw". But then I heard it, and I heard some of his other songs. They're amazing. If you haven't heard it, listen to Southern State of Mind.

I find the transition to country fascinating.

Unlike Kid Rock (who sang that duet with Cheryl Crow to test the waters, then went on to sample three classics and strategically release that summertime song right before summertime) Darius took the more traditional approach and just started writing.

My neighbors are usually a litmus test to see if a country song is going to become an anthem or not. When one of them first played that Kid Rock Summer song, I was like, "Damn, it worked. It really, really worked!"

Holy shit, I just looked up Uncle Kracker to see what he was up to. They play his shit too! LOL. Success.
