I didn't have to deal with an HR lady, instead I dealt with the VP of some part of the company. First thing the guy said is "this is not going to be a normal proper job interview." I'm cool with that. Next thing he said "This is the best damn resume I've seen in a long time." Thanks. Then we start talking about cars (why I'm interested in engineering) and he brings up that he owns an MG TF, a 350z, a 41 ford, something I can't remember from '39, and is helping his son tune up an Evo (he said 400hp). The rest of the interview went pretty well, the guy encouraged me to think about staying with the company and that they would send me to the UK or Austria for a summer during college for a co-op. Money wise the guy said they would be extremely competitive which is nice since most of the other jobs I've been looking at have been either no pay or minimum wage. He said he would love to hire me on the spot but that the HR lady would appreciate if they went through a formal process. The downside? It is a 20min (11 mile) commute over bad roads through the center of town. Oh, the company is based in Austria and makes parts for cars. (things like air bag canisters, mercedes air shock cylinders, other tube based stuff).

20 minutes!? With a strong possibility of working abroad!? That's a drop in the bucket—snag it if offered!

I second Fractal's sentiments. An 11 mile commute is a good thing. Could be A LOT worse.

UMMMMM.....AWESOME.

Even your commute is 20% less than the US average.

I'll join the chorus saying 'do it'. What does the job actually involve?

It obviously seems like an excellent opportunity worth grabbing with both hands. Unless you're this guy:

The summer co-ops while your in school may even be paid, and once you graduate, insta-job. Or not: you could choose to look around, your degree plus your co-op experience would open further doors. They know or should know this, and will probably be generous with their hiring terms. Smart companies recognize smart talent and get them before a competitor does.

Sounds really promising. But I must point out that the "really competitive" might mean that they'll compete well with the other jobs you've been looking at. This could be a great opportunity to negotiate. They'll pay you as little as they can, but if they like you, you can ask for more or better terms.

Either way, 'grats and I concur with everyone else...11 miles is about a perfect way to drive enough to clear your head, warm the rig up properly, yet not buy gas every day and a half.

Plus the opportunity to get paid to travel a bit?

Really? That's as bad as it gets? You should live in Austin. Those 11 miles would take you 40 minutes.

I'm sure it does mean that but the other jobs I'm looking at are Mijers and being a lifeguard again.

Glad the interview went well. I'll trade your 20 minute 11 mile commute for my hour and half 12 mile commute any day.
