So yeah, I picked up a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on Thursday. I finally got some time to start tearing into it today. It was free, in part, because it wouldn't idle.
Before I was going to touch ANYTHING in the engine bay, 300k miles worth of grime needed to go away. I really like !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for big time engine bay cleanup. There are probably better options, but it's dirt cheap, and does a good enough job for me to at least be able to work. It did a great job removing 45 years worth of crud on my Scout, and didn't disappoint on the Ranger.
First up, was the usual general maintenance. New plugs, wires, PCV and air filter. While I was working on that, I disconnected the battery to reset what passes for an ECU. After the plugs, wires, etc, I pulled off the idle air control valve (oddly, located on the side of the air box on the Ranger) and gave it a through scrubbing with throttle body cleaner. After that, I removed and cleaned the MAP sensor. While I was removing it, I noticed its vacuum line was completely trashed. Dry rotted and cracked, definitely not holding vacuum. I happened to have some spare vac line, so that was replaced. Everything was reassembled, and damned if it didn't fire up and settle to a nice steady idle!
After letting everything warm up, I cleaned the heck out of the incredibly nasty throttle body, and ran an entire can of Seafoam through the engine. While waiting to restart after the last of the Seafoam, I cleaned out the bed, and scrubbed down the outside and the tires (this thing is clearly going to need new wheels). A massive, massive improvement all around. In the glovebox, I found the receipt for the reman transmission and new clutch the owner claimed were installed last year. Looks like I have confirmation on that now.
So, it's running smoothly and clean (on the outside at least). Hopefully next week I can find the time to hit DMV to take care of registration, get some plates and hit the road legally! Hell of a deal for free!
