Horiffically bad. It is the car for people who could afford any number of amazing metal and went "No, let me just buy the most expensive toyota that isn't an SUV" for NO. REASON. AT. ALL. The SC430 does NOTHING better than any of its competition that includes the boxster, the Z3/4, the SLK, and so on and so forth. It is slow, handles like ass, looks like a blob, and is expensive as all hell. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

Aside from the handling, was it a good cruiser?

It's overweight. It's underpowered. It's not comfortable. It doesn't handle well. Add these things up, and you should have a car that's a decent image car, but it's ugly. The back seats are best used a bookshelves. It'd got a power retractable hardtop, but having the top down kills the Lexus-quietness of the cabin. There is actually not one positive thing I can say about this car. Unless maybe you put a decent exhaust on it, at which point it will sound good (with the top down) while it goes slower than anything that competes with it.

It's a bloated boulevard cruiser made for upper-middle class housewives to waft down Rodeo Drive and pretend to be one of the rich folks . Sort of an upscale Solara, if you will. It's the sort of car that well-off women buy when they have a mid-life crisis.

It's not a bad car, just a bad successor to the sporting "SC" nameplate, in sort of the same way that the Catera was a good car but a bad Cadillac.

I'd look to Audi. Their cabriolet is of high quality inside and out, and the convertible is great for long drives and definitely tuned to luxury over anything sporty. I actually prefer the multi-layer, almost handmade feel of the cloth top to the those like BMW's or Lexus's.

Here, the legendary toyota reliability is actually a detriment; you're stuck with it forever once you have it. You can't even hope for a breakdown to get it a quick trip to the junkyard.

I think it's one of the only good looking cars to ever come out of Lexus, the other being the LFA (though it's in a different part of the beauty spectrum).
Otherwise, probably not that great given the era of Lexus it spawned from.

If you can find one of the 14 they sold, it would definitely be kinda more interesting. The specs make it sound promising: a 3.0L straight 6 making 225 horsepower (BMW wouldn't have one of those in the 3 series until 2004), 5 speed manual....well, actually that's it.
It also weighed over 3500 lbs, probably having something to do with the relentless pursuit of sheer numbness.

Lol that would be hard to find!!
They should have made it with the V8 to compensate for the weight

The v8 made only 35 extra hp. It actually would be worse once the added weight was figured in....

It looks like shit. The wheels it came with were laughable. The engine was meh. The ride was not what a lexus should have been. The handling was not confidence-inspiring. Oh and it's expensive. And did I mention that it looks like shit?

But the Catera was so awful in its Opel Omega guise it single-handedly torpedoed the brand's credibility in the executive sedan segment.

Hmm. When new they were positioned to go against the Mercedes SL which was a bit.. ambitious. But now the used prices are more in line with its contemporary SLKs and Audi A4 'verts I think it might actually not be the worst deal in the world if you're looking for a topless cruising machine.

Top Gear named this "The Worst Car In The History Of The World." I have to concur.
It's terrible at everything, and at best only mediocre at being a car. There are numerous better alternatives.
That said, I really wish people would stance cars like this, because then they aren't ruining anything worth driving.

Exactly! But if you remove the Cadillac badge, and replace it with something more... normal, you suddenly get a halfway decent car!

The Z3/4: The ride is way to harsh on the road, except the newest gen, which is substantially more expensive.
SLK: Looks like a cheerleader.
Boxter: IMS issues.
SL: Heard of Airmatic suspension?

That's what I was thinking. Thank God for some reason around here. I would take this over a SLK or an Audi, just because of the fact that both those cars are money pits. The SC does what it was designed to do really really well.

Z3/4 - actual sports car
SLK - actual sports car
Boxster - actual sports car
So if you want a sporty roadster/coupe car, why not get something that actually works as one? Buying the SC430 because the boxster occasionally has issues (and really that was only the first gen) is like buying a GM W-body or a ford escort or a dodge intrepid because "Whoa now, better not get one o' dem furrin jobs! I'll just stick with my ford or chevy because that is *proven* technology. Those people buying those camrys and accords are rolling the dice!" I guarantee you anyone who has ever bought the SC430 new only did so because they though "I want something sportier than my lexus.....but I also want a lexus" and that was that. No cross shopping. At all.

"legendary toyota reliability" is a joke perpetuated only by the fact that their MANY recalls are usually silent, so they fly under the radar more than other brands. My mother in law's sc430 is boring and falling apart. My mom and sister both own siennas which they talk about like they have saved the world, but in reality are constantly going into the shop for mechanical issues and body problems (broken/stuck doors etc), and every time turns into significantly more time down as there are a dozen recalls to perform and other problems to fix.
Everything has it's ups and downs, but this stupid sense of overachieving reliability ToyHons get drives me nuts.
