It literally means nothing. Who's with me?

But the base word, "enthuse" is just such a great word to say.

just curious, do you have some reasoning to back that up or...? It's hard to agree without an explanation, lol

I'd just like to point out that "a sports car enthusiast" is the first example given when you google "enthusiast". That's cool.
Also, if you read the definition, you can figure out what the word means.

well I mean, I don't see what's wrong with the word, but then again, I haven't honestly thought about it much, however I do consider myself an enthusiast of numerous things.

It's trash. It implies every "car enthusiast" should be into the same sort of things and conform to a set of intangible rules established by a "vocal majority" comprised largely of internet commenters

In my opinion, that's not at all what the word means. It simply means that you like something. All of us here are car enthusiasts. Some of us like stanced cars, others like bro trucks, some like motorcycles. We're all car enthusiasts.
If you want to get rid of the word, what would you use to replace it?

Are you a living creature? Do you belong to a species? Do you belong to a gender? Do you favor partners of a specific gender or not? Do you have a last name? Do you have an occupation? Do you have a high-school education? Do you have more than a high school education? Do you have a professionally recognized skill? Do you have an ethnicity? Do you have a nationality? Do you live in a state within your country? Do you have things you like to do that other also like to do?
If you can answer 'yes' to any of that - especially the first five - then your fight against being contained by a label was lost at birth.

I agree. Lot of folks hide behind that label to engage in judgment and snark without really actually having any enthusiast chops.

Technically we are all enthusiast about something but us here on oppo are more we are "Opponauts"! Like regular automotive enthusiast we get excited but unlike regular auto enthusiast we are required to be open to a variety of transport, have a desire to seek out really cool stuff that we have never seen before, and, last but certainly not least, not be dicks. Ask an enthusiast if he oppo's and if he knows what's up you found a friend.

My point is there shouldn't be a catchall word like it. There should not be a particular word to replace it.

Here's the definition Google gives us, which Leadbull provided earlier: a person who is highly interested in a particular activity or subject.
I suppose that being enthusiastic about something doesn't necessarily connote an encyclopedic knowledge of the topic. I'm enthusiastic about smoking cigars, but I really only know about two or three brands personally. If you ask me for a recommendation, I'll only suggest those which I know. So, if somebody is using the term enthusiast to imply that they are all-knowing in a subject, you are correct, and a better term is warranted.
I think the best term in this case is aficionado . Here's the Google definition, emphasis is mine: a person who is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about an activity, subject, or pastime . It's a great word, but it carries a bit of baggage with it because it sounds kind of snooty or highbrow. Continuing the cigar analogy, think about Cigar Aficionado magazine: thick enough to use it as a doorstop, full of pretentious reviews and photographs of people smoking ridiculously priced cigars. It's definitely geared towards those who (think they) know a lot about cigars, but as an average reader you feel you are missing out on some superior life experience because you don't smoke the same Cohibas that Arnold Schwarzenegger does. And even though it's a better word, do you really want to be a car aficionado?
So, I would say that enthusiast is a fine word, as long as you don't misuse it. And I guess that was your whole point from the beginning. But let's not ban the word. Let's just realize that most who use the term have no idea what it really means.

When I am at the mall and I see a morbidly obese person......instead of calling them fat- I call them a funnel cake enthusiast......yeah, I know I'm going to hell.
