Sky Sports has an interesting write up on how Mercedes is able to be so dominant in F1 this year. Apparently, what Mercedes have done is split the turbo in half to negate the downsides of a turbocharged engine. It's a bit over my head, but here you go:
Writing in Motorsport magazine, [Sky Sports F1's Mark] Hughes discloses that Mercedes' breakthrough 'innovation is having the turbo's compressor at one end of the engine and the turbine at the other, linked by a long shaft through the vee of the engine'.
The 'trick turbo layout' triggers a series of critical performance benefits. A reduction in turbo lag means less power needs to be be harvested from the car's ERS unit to keep the turbine spooled off throttle. That in turn improves the efficiency of the car, with more power reserved for performance gain and less fuel consequentially used up.
This design reportedly gives Merc as much as 50-70 more horsepower over the competition. You can read the rest of the discussion at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Do all Mercedes motors have this or is it just limited to the silver arrows?

The article states that all the Merc-powered teams have this engine, but they only received it late in the game. So they didn't have the advantage of building the car so carefully around the power plant.

Interesting. I wonder why they didn't run the cables from the modified turbo straight down then over, rather than over then straight down.
