So, as I'm walking down the street to the parking garage, one of these babies (a 612 Scaglietti) pulls up at the light. The driver's clearly either insane, has more money than God, or both to risk it on DC potholes.

That looks exactly like Rusto's dad's 612!

I got to drive one for 2 days this week. It's surprisingly OK over average sized potholes. I'm not in DC so I dunno how huge your potholes get.
As long as the wheels don't get bent or tires don't puncture the car can handle potholes well. The long wheelbase and magnetic dampers make it super comfy. Such as awesome GT car.

I grabbed the first picture of one I could find online that didn't have a giant "CLICK HERE TO EMBIGGEN!" watermarked on top, since I wasn't thinking fast enough to shoot the one I saw.

There are some car-swallowers; DC roads aren't great during the summer, but right now they're downright hazardous. Nice to know it's not as delicate as it looks on first glance, though.

Damn the car-swallower potholes! I hate those things!
The 612 definitely isn't delicate. It's a big heavy beast. And there are some out there that came with the 6MT. The stick shift cars should be one of the more reliable modern Ferraris. You just gotta keep up with the scheduled maintenance.
It has a lot of luxury stuff in it too for a Ferrari from the middle of the last decade. It could be had with nav, bluetooth, and parking sensors. You can actually DD it if you have the cash for that and live somewhere with smaller potholes. The price of the F1 equipped cars keeps dropping. You can get one for under $100K now.

Yeah, it was in fantastic shape, so I doubt it's a daily driver - given how bad our winter's been he may not have had it out since late October.

My boss drove a 612, and it's one hell of a car.
It's not feels like a ferrari, it feels like what if ferrari made a Mercedes CL.

Interesting - it definitely had a different engine sound from some of the others I've heard and seen, so that comparison makes sense.

That makes total sense. Winters sound brutal out there.
I'm in So Cal. We barely even got any rain this year. Big drought going on.

yeah. Plus it's huge, bigger than the 599 or the F12 and about the size of the Mercedes CL. As long as you can keep her running, it would be a perfect grand tourer.

Winters aren't that bad, normally - usually we get one big snow, maybe two, and then a couple of 1-2 inch postcard snows. This year's just been insane for everybody weather-wise.

That doesn't seem too bad during the normal winters. But I can see how the stronger winters and bad traffic make big potholes common.

That, and we've had some extra wacky temperature swings - there have been 3 70-degree-and-sunny to 30-degree-and-snow swings in the past month and a half. I'm surprised we have any asphalt left at this point.

those swings are killers! the water keeps melting and then freezing again. the swings are way worse than consistently sub zero temperatures
