In addition to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Cornell accepted my son, too :D

He was turned down by Yale and Duke but we're still waiting to hear from the Air Force Academy. He seems to be leaning towards Berkeley if the AFA is a no. He can do NROTC there, which is good ... medical school is freaking expensive.

My father's alma mater! Congratulations; I'm afraid I don't know much about the medical school, but the law school is top-notch.

He's more about the passion part than the money. If the military covers the costs it'll make the money part easier. I doubt very much doctors will ever be make anything less than a decent living, anyway.

He'd do pre-med at Cornell and go elsewhere for med school. My wife's oldest bro went there, too. He did the hotel management program.

Congrats! I went to Berkeley. My brother did NROTC at Berkeley. That place is not as liberal as it used to be but being in ROTC sill kind of sets you up as a bit of a misfit.

I've experimented with Pre-med and (AF)ROTC programs before...

Neither was a good fit for me, but they seem to treat people well. Good luck to him!

TLDR: Thats awesome, your son will love either, will definitely become a great contributor to society and not at all like Randy, and Watkins Glen is 40 minutes away (Take rt 327 Treman park way through enfield/ route 79 its the only worthwhile way to go)

Congratulations! I currently live there (Ithaca, unfortunately not for long), worked for their Human Ecology dept in marketing and though I went to IC I'm positive he's made great choices for either school like most of my friends. After growing up around the environment that is Cornell and knowing what amazing work is generated there in the ways the Randy's can't describe, I can't imagine how great that must feel as a Parent.

Nevermind the campus looks like something from Tolkein's Elven Middle Earth, it is a bigass community of scary smart, yet down to earth people (Ithaca has the most advanced degree holders out of any US city. Also the most waterfalls per sq mile. And tree species.) and befriending those people is the real gift in where the mind/person is expanded.

last pre-doc/chili cookoff party I went to I flirted with a gorgeous woman who made huge breakthroughs in detecting bomb precursors more accurately and sensitive than anything before. Then the flamboyant chemical sciences post doc revolutionizing medicine delivery rushed home to bring back his 6 foot barrel telescope just so we could see Jupiter and its moons for the first time. Nevermind the actual astrophysicists. Hosted by one of my best friends formerly of the CDC getting money thrown at her by Cornell to make botulism bacteria pump out vaccines. All still 20-somethings.

Berkely is similar as I can imagine many collegetowns are and it's not at all smug braggadocio. It is genuinely being taken back by the ways these people give me hope for humanity in every encounter.

Is he going through Cornell's ROTC program? Great, great men and women have come out of that, among the most down to earth and ambitious. Congrats at either choice, hope its sunny when he moves in regardless of what campus!

Congrats!! Also, a bit of advice if Berkeley is his #1: Cornell gives out great financial aid packages. If Berkeley does not give a competitive offer right off the bat, do not be shy about faxing them the Cornell offer and asking them to reconsider. This (and a strongly-worded letter from my UM alumni grandparents) got me an extra $32k out of Michigan because Cornell had offered me a full ride.

No problem! Not sure if he would have in-state tuition at UC Berkeley, but I know it's up there with Michigan's for out-of-state, so every bit helps!

congrats, the college admissions stuff is the worst. I've been going through the same thing, I think I'm going to Lehigh though I'm not sure. The real question is have you brainwashed him to be a manual diesel wagon lover?

Yes, he would qualify for in-state tuition ... which is a pretty big delta compared to out of state prices at the UC schools.
