OK, it's technically a scooter, but this line is actually in the article:

As such, the C600 Sport could be both the cheapest and the most reliably entertaining BMW you'll ever own.

*sigh*

The Piaggio MP4 has a CVT as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, almost all modern Piaggios and Vespas are of the "Twist and Go" variety (they've occasionally put out a retro special edition with a 2 stroke and manual). I can't think of any new scooter offered in the US that is manual except for the Genuine Stella.

I've riden one of these, feels like a bike, they're fast too. You wind on that throttle and they go

BMWs are ridiculously expensive regardless of what the roundel is on. In a recent issue, C&D claimed about the 4 series that "the only stripper that is more expensive is the one that calls your wife"

My mother is considering a motorcycle with a CVT actually, mainly due to difficulties gripping the clutch, and she doesn't feel confident in keeping a motorcycle like my father's F650GS upright, or even his newer R1200RT.

I have a scooter, a very small and cheap Yamaha Mio 110 with CVT, and they are really, i mean really fast.

It's almost feels like an electric. CVTs is great for scooters, especially if they has a very low weight like my mio (180 pounds)

They are fine for scooters. I've owned a scooter (Bajaj Chetak 150cc) though, and just like with a car it is more fun with a manual.

Yeah. I think it's time for me to be honest: I can't drive manual bikes with clutch. How it's shifted is not make any sense in my mind. especially those old vespa scooters.

But i can drive manual cars.

I think this is because i'm not that into motorcycle, and my scooter is only used for short trips, less then 10 miles or so..

Just save up for the R1200R.

Or their upcoming S1000R.

Also, this is a manual in the sense tha't two clutches in a VW is an Auto.

Kinja'd!!!

Sadly, we won't get it because it may "cannibalize" Silverwing sales. Dafuq?

Most (if not all) states require that scooters have automatic transmissions to be registered as Mopeds, so that's where that comes from.

I don't think that's true. For a scooter to be classified as a moped it is usually based on displacement. Specifically, to be under 50cc (that's the reason for all those 49cc bikes). In most states (or at least Oregon) you can't ride anything more powerful without having your motorcycle endorsement.

Isn't that the point of a scooter? Point and go transportation for an urban setting? That's why I used to ride them.

remember this scooter has 60hp so it should be really quick even with CVT.

Just like with cars, there is more than one requirement to be a moped :P Usually it's something like under 50cc, top speed of 30mph or less, less than 2hp, and automatic transmission, along with various equipment requirements.

Ah, we have the less than 30 mph, and also that it must have bike pedals. It's ridiculous though. 50cc is not enough for anyone. Just go get your motorcycle endorsement. You'll have to take a class which will make you a far better rider and a whole new slew of options open up for you!

Am I really having to defend a manual transmission over a CVT?

Of course not, but this is a scooter, not a motorcycle.

Well I've always been in to classic Vespas and Lambrettas, and they were always manuals. I enjoyed them and their personality more than the plastic-y modern versions.

The pedal rule is kinda archaic anymore, but several states have it. 50cc is just fine with the 30mph limit. That being said, MI just upped it to 100cc in 2012, which is nice.

Unfortunately, my Honda CT70H is still a manual so I'm stuck in a weird gray zone where it's clearly a scooter, but it's legally a motorcycle. There's no inspection in MI though, so I may just tell the DMV it's a moped and hope the cops don't know much about 70s scooters.

30mph limit on a flat street, ok. Here in Portland we have some hills! Besides I think the rule is silly, everyone should have to take a Motorcycle Safety Class and learn the basics. Of transportation deaths, something like 41% of casualties were motorcyclists and quite a few are single bike crashes. I was one of those people who started out riding a 150cc manual shift scoot without an endorsement. Then I took the class and realized how terrible at it I had been! Now I'm all legal, thankfully.

And the cops can tell here because your license plate starts with MC for Motorcycle and MP for Moped. Although I'm sure I'm a few people have upped there 50cc motors and removed the speed governors, but I think they should just get legal and the selection of bikes becomes so much more impressive.
