Here it is. Does it look as bad as I think it does? I know this is an honest scenario, but people are stupid and will most likely confirm their preconceived notions about the beloved standard transmission.

A manual is only hard if you panic. This goes for anything really.

yeah when you start to learn, you want to kill yourself. After you learn, you can't live without it. Love the manual and I REFUSE to have anything but.

I would just hope that Subaru would actually try and prove how fun it is. Possibly a teen making his first perfect shift, not stalling, something showing how enjoyable and rewarding the process can be.

It's funny I never made the car jerk around like that when starting out. But now I do. Because I'm lazy and tired in the morning.

I have to agree, that never really happened to me. But, if it's cold out and I get lazy, the throttle really isn't smooth in my car and makes it jerky.

LOL. Like the honda car ads..
I certainly did not do thise when I learnt. These guys are pressing the gas. You just let up nice and slow and learn the engagement point, then slight hills etc. No biggie.

That is a good point. They should, probably wont, but should. I found this ad hilarious in they portrayed it like the dad confused to two sons.

The ad just reconfirms what most buyers are already going to think about manuals. We live in a culture of convenience, and low manual uptake is one of the prices we pay for that.

Unfortunately. Could have easily swung this one in favor of manuals.

It wouldn't have helped. The prejudice against rowing your own outside of the enthusiast community runs deep.

Well, at the very least it could have appealed to the kids. Have the dad drop it down and floor it, take a few corners, then race a Mustang. Something like that. Or like this.

People who buy new subarus don't buy them for "fun" they buy them because thats what they're stereo typically drawn to.
Doesn't help that most US drivers can't drive manual, let alone do they even know manual cars still exist for sale?

Why do I have to watch an ad before I can watch an ad?

It's accurate. And it is a pain until it just clicks. And then, like going Black, most people rarely ever go back. Unless they don't care about cars and live in a traffic heavy urban environment.
Wait...

To me it says that at least they're learning. They're not giving up and saying "Fuck it Dad, buy me a car with an automatic".
But I see your point - it makes those who aren't exposed to someone driving a stick think it's hard to learn.
When I was growing up, my Grandpa had an early 70's Toyota Corona with a stick, and being that I already loved cars, I knew I wanted to learn how to drive a stick even when I was way too young to learn. That was the only stick car I was ever exposed to growing up, but it definitely made an impact. When there was a chance to get my 2nd car - a $600 POS '81 Accord Hatch - I was so glad it was a stick.
18 of my 22 cars have been sticks, and I'll bang my own gears until I can't do it anymore :)

A commercial isn't going to turn people into car enthusiasts. Also, manual transmissions =/= performance vehicles.

I haven't driven a manual car in almost 4 months. It pains me.

The other thing about learning to drive manual is it's all about the teacher and the car. I learned from a great teacher in a 2002 Toyota Camry. The car was beat to hell with 150,000 miles and loads of play in everything. The good thing was that it had a very forgiving clutch and (thanks to my teacher) I have only ever stalled a manual car twice in my life.
