My aunt asked me for car recommendations

Looks like I've reached that point in my life. Anyway, as much as I hate to outsource work that's clearly mine (sike), I need a little help on this one. No car strikes me right away as perfect.

I've reduced her stream-of-consciousness description to the following list:

- new

- $25,000 budget

- good in snow

- respectable fuel economy

- not "momish" (she's an empty-nester now, goddammit)

Also:

- she spoke of a sunroof, so this would be icing on the cake

- manual must be available

- I'd only like recommend cars generally held to be reliable (aka no Minis)

So far, I've come up with the Impreza. I'd like to recommend Golf (Beetle?) but I can't refer anyone to a VW, their reliability track record is unfavorable...

Anyone who says Miata will be hugged by me personally and promptly shot.

Convince her new is the wrong decision so she can get something exciting. Show her carmax and other places specializing in used cars. Or pre-owned certified vehicles.

Good answer... Might just be attractive and fun enough to avoid momishnessdom

4wd Miata with removable hardtop that has a sunroof in it.

Actually, isn't the Juke pretty much perfectly in line with all this except for looking comically awful?

Alternately, maybe an Escape, I'unno.

Juuuuuuuuke... Good point, I'll let her know about it. It could be perfect, or get kicked to the curb, depending on her reaction to the styling

Lawl, I was just about to say a mazdaspeed 3. You can get a speed 3 for 5 dollars under 25k msrp, but i'm sure you could talk down the price a bit.

No manual available :( although I'd still drive one without. The sport mode is damn near telepathic.

VW. Super fuel economy, excellent resale value, timeless style and general well esteemed amongst middle aged women. (I've had several mention to me how they would love VWs, despite not really knowing why)

For just $5k more, she could be the coolest aunt on the block.

I recommend a new Jetta TDI SE. Everything on the list and a hell of a lot of fun. Plus the TDI engine is damn near bulletproof. Just don't get the DSG, it's not that theyre unreliable, the maintenance can just be expensive.

a hyundai elantra gt

Kinja'd!!!

New- check

Under $25,000- check

good in snow- can't be that bad, it's fwd

good fuel economy- 34 mpg highway

not a mommy car

has an optional panoramic roof

Has a manual available with all models, including the fully loaded one

Hyundai has a pretty good reputation for reliability, and it has a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on the powertrain, and a 5 year 60,000 on everything else.

Honestly, I don't know; but I have an idea! Buy me one and I will put it through it's paces and report back with what I find!

A ford fusion. I like the was those look. A Mazda speed 3 or a regular Mazda 3. A Volvo could be a good choice.

Lexus IS 250. they DID have man avaible,. but only on the RWD. AWD with auto. reliable, sunroof available,.

oh, new. dam . would CPO work?

I mean.. she did say something "two years old" cooooould work

I think the IS is a little high end, plus most are RWD

well, i'm in canada, so almost ALL of the send gen are AWD.

the IS is the young, hip car. elegant, but not to showy, comfortable, yet a little sporty looking, cruiser

Maybe try an Audi A3? also CPO, no one would ever guess its the mom mobile. tht honor goes to the A4.
(note that ALL audis are built in germany, where they know a thing or 2 about screwing cars together. SOME VWs are built in mexico..where they would rather have a taco)

unfortunately yeah, which is stupid. Was worth the shot though. They need to drop a v6 in that thing.

You could get a base Mazda CX-5 with AWD or a manual, but not both. Frankly, any FWD small car (Ford Focus, Chevy Cruze, Kia Forte/Rio, Hyundai Accent) would meet all your qualifications and, with a decent set of snow tires, do just fine in the snow as long as your aunt doesn't live in Alaska or Vail, CO.

DK..here in Canada its sper high.

Meh, I had understood the TDIs have above average reliability.

Jeep Cherokee?

Can be had for under 25k, great in snow, no manual though which is sad.

New 200 could be a potential but again, no manual.

Hyundai Veloster could be an option. Not sure how good it'd be in snow but it's decently fun and can be had with a manual. Heck you can even get the turbo for under 25k (The manual turbo's are actually pretty fun. I almost tried to get one).
