Many times I've passed someone at 85mph while they're standing still at 65mph. I will usually see them again as we both take the same exit ramp and sit at the same light. I've also been passed by faster cars and inevitably catch up to them at their exit, myself plodding along at 65mph and them weaving in-and-out at high speed.

I suppose I should've qualified that better...I'm not implying that speeding is always worthwhile and we should mob the other page to say so. My thought was more "gonna go troll the 'ANYBODY WHO EXCEEDS THE SPEED LIMIT IS RECKLESS AND I AM HOLIER THAN THOU' crowd" and generally "watch the shenanigans ensue".
An anecdote somewhat related to yours, though, as I've seen it brought up a few times on the linked article as well...I've noticed on several occasions that I end up catching up with the guy that passed me miles back because he blazed past me at 90mph and then for whatever reason slowed down to 70, thus maintaining the same average as me going 80mph. It's the inconsistency of his speed that makes it ineffective with regard to time saving (safety implications aside). The assertion that somebody traveling a consistent 65mph in the same direction as someone travelling 85mph over equal (and appreciable...) distance will arrive at essentially the same time as the other traveler just doesn't follow.

Oh I get what you were doing - I was just sharing what I've always found. You're correct of course that driving faster for longer will get you there (wherever "there" is) sooner than if you were obeying the speed limit.

Cool. Glad we're on the same page, then.
