Seriously? Remember when cars names and associated numbers reflected the size of the engine and shit made sense:
300ZX - 3.0L V6
240sx - 2.4L I4
740i - 4.0L V8 7 Series
I just saw an Infiniti FX35 - now a QX 70 3.7?
WTF!? That is all...

Yeah, shit's getting stupid.
Car makers think buyers will get "confused" if successive generations have model names with lower numeric numbers. It's stupid and insulting.

The 2014 C-Class is available with a 1.8L four, but rather than call it the C180, they call it the C250. Because marketing to ego.

Manufacturers have established models and don't want to change designations with engine displacements. BMW has made the 328i, 335i, 528i, 535i, etc. for about a decade now, and Mercedes has done the same with their models.
Plus, with engines tending to lose displacement in favor of forced induction, Mercedes doesn't want to make a 2013 E550 and then a 2014 E460 because no one will want a "lesser" Mercedes.

It's one of those things that goes in cycles - pure fashion/marketing, nothing more.

You forget that a lot of people buy for badges (every single CL600 buyer ever) and that there are also a lot of stupid people.

I sort of a agree and disagree -
yeah, people recognize the 328i, but now the 428i is all new, but just a coupe of the 328i, and there is a damn 328 "Gran Turismo" ugly sloped whale-shaped wagon thing, and a 428i "Gran Coupe" which is a "4-door coupe" version of the coupe, which is a coupe of the recognizable 328i - that is BULLLSHIT and CONFUSING!

BMW's fucked-up naming conventions aside, you probably won't see the numeric portions of these names change any time soon.
Audi is the only German luxury marque that still tells you the engine displacement with badging anyway. Just get an Audi :)

Wiki says you are correct as of 1996 - so that means BMW started this stupid trend a while back..suckas...

other than the x40i cousins (540, 740, etc) I don't think it started until very recently. I don't know exactly when because my car doesn't like. The 530 was a 5, with a 3 liter engine
